Before Vance asked Zelenskyy whether he had said thank you, Zelenskyy was appealing for collaboration with Ukraine to recover the stolen orphans from Russia.

I have been closely involved in this case through the NGO working group with Helppeople and Aerial Recovery group, working with the Ukrainian government, and I cannot overstate how much they care about these children. Their concern and determination to bring them home are immeasurable.

The working group worked tirelessly to evacuate them from the orphanages, but some Russian partisans from the corrupt shadow government that Russia was planning to stablish collaborated with the Russians to abduct them. We did everything in our power to get there sooner, but sometimes they had already been stolen.

When we spoke with our handler from the military administration I will never forget the bitterness in his tone “We know exactly how many, and plan to stop at nothing until they are all recovered”.

When the government got information of the systematic relocation system of the Russians had set up and that there were negotiations with the Children Ombudsman of Russia, the government turned to us for help because we had been involved in evacuating orphans.

We mapped out a rescue route that would cost $5,000 per child, but sadly, that was the best we could offer. As a young NGO, we simply did not have the necessary funding. The scale of the operation made it impossible—it required diplomatic solutions beyond any NGO’s reach. At one point, there were 2,000 children in a single facility, ready to be brought back to Ukraine, but we had to tell the government that although we spoke with partners, this was beyond any capability for NGOs.

Since the moment they became aware of the stolen children and since the moment we had to tell them no, The Office of the Ombudsman for Children’s Affairs and the presidency have never stopped trying to find solutions to return them, they are deeply committed to bringing these children home.

They also refuse to use these children as bargaining chips, which is why they turned to the U.S. government for help. So that they may negotiate a way for Russia to fulfil their IHL obligations and return them.

Having been speaking about the children before being insulted about “having said thanks” I am honestly surprised Zelenskyy remained so composed when the U.S. government not only glossed over his request but insulted him. But knowing how much he and his government care, I wouldn’t be surprised that this was the issue that finally set him off.

They’ve done this before, standard Russian operating procedure. Kill/enslave all the adults, Russify the kids, and breed the Russian out of them over time.
