Joining the EU is like a marriage. As long at the bride and groom agree it’s what they want, then go for it.

Then it’s done, they just need to ask their legislators that for some diplomacy and lobbying the EU to make the rules a bit looser.

I would LOVE to.
But I don’t think Europe would have us. And I kinda get it.

If we do, can we get a few French rafales with nukes stationed at Trenton? You know…..just in case

Increased cooperation between Europe and Canada would be beneficial for both. Europe could gain access to natural resources, while Canada would gain a significant new market to diversify its economy. However, Canada is neither geographically, politically, nor culturally European, making full membership in the European Union almost impossible. In my opinion, Canada should get closer to Europe by joining the Schengen Area and establishing specialized trade agreements with the EU.

I’d vote yes, we already border 2 EU countries, can we please get in?

Maybe someone should tell Canadians that the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement/CETA aka accord économique et commercial global/AECG has not been ratified by all EU member states yet, because Canada (i.e. Government, Canadian lobbyist, companies and interest groups) insisted on some parts that are considered problematic by several countries.
If Canada cannot offer a trade deal that appeals to all EU countries what are the chances of Canada becoming a EU member?

Weird poll since Canada is ocean away almost same size with whole European continent , so if somehow Canada joins EU then EU become no longer EU but something else since Canada is in Americas and far away

Would be actually great, EURO as currency and also visa free for work & travel.
Maybe EU also can learn from Canada how to have two languages, and we can finally have English as mandatory and second oficial in EU?

Absolutely. Also, could you consider reposting tomorrow morning EST? Most Europeans are asleep right now.

I’m wondering how this little flirting between Canada and Europe is going to end if the conservatives do win the election for which they are ahead in the polls. The EU with Pierre Poilievre in it is gonna be grand.

The EU is also a customs union. Unless Canada is economically okay with a complete break with the US. 70% of Canada’s foreign trade is with the US so being in the EU would hurt economically if it were to happen today. Euro adoption is also a requirement. There’s also the deficit requirement, Canada would have to massively reduce its deficit to be in line with EU’s budgetary rules.

EEA might be more realistic and sensible in the context of the current trade landscape.
EU is a huge commitment. While I personally wouldn’t mind Canadians being part of it, the current sentiment is for the most part linked to the antics of the USA. Who knows what the world will look like in five years. We desperately need to avoid a situation where Canada ends up joining only for Canadian citizens wanting to leave again a few years later. It will result in a lot of wasted time, money and effort on both sides and could possibly end up destabilizing the EU. Besides CANEXIT just doesn’t have that same ring to it.
Also if Canada joins it would definitely raise tensions with the United States. A Trump administration wouldn’t take kindly to the EU expanding to its borders. It might unlock a whole new type of cold war. I’m all for decoupling from the USA where possible but we should avoid becoming direct adversaries.

I’m not sure we can join because of certain factors. But we can make closer ties.
The goal is to step out of US shadow – diversifying instead of serving one

It would extremely hard to get Canada adapt to EU standards, for instance, what do you do with the traffic laws and signs? . Canada runs on a different system. I can see something like light version of EFTA but thats about it .

Canadians don’t even fully understand what the EU is and how it works. I think it’s something people would support on paper but if it was actually put to a vote Canadians would balk at the level of integration.

As a Canadian, I don’t think people would be as open to it if they knew more about what it entails. I think free movement would kill it for a lot of people. The last thing Canadians want is more foreigners coming in. The average Canadian also would not have any interest in living in Germany or France for example. The cultural differences are massive.

The main cultures of Canada, Australia, NZ and even the US are all direct derivatives of European culture, with the exception of certain indigenous cultures.
The differences within Europe are much larger than the cultural or political difference between Europe and these countries. You think northern Europe relates more to Canada or to rural Balkan countryside?
The geographic argument that Canada is not in the European continent is valid, though of course adjustable if we want to. The important part of the EU is that we share values, not borders.
We should welcome this interest in Europe and talk about the consequences much more before making any conclusions about this.
