      There are valid reasons to give Putin a soft landing on Ukraine – not least that he at least exercises control over Russia and its nuclear stockpile, and what comes after may not. The problem is that the Trump admin is cack-handed and venal, values loyalty over ability, seems unable to plan past a news-cycle. and thus liable to provoke a worst-of-all-worlds, for the US and for the world.
