This will be life changing if they can make it a success.

    2. Would the money not be better spent upgrading the line between dublin and sligo, any time I have taken it its comically slow

I read somewhere we could easily change the line into high speed rail and it wouldn’t be that prohibitive in cost.

Most of the cost of high speed rail is land purchase and grading. Existing rail lines don’t need regrading.

Unfortunately this country won’t build infrastructure unless the growth and development happens first. It’s tragic.

The money would be far better spent on the road from the Collooney roundabout to the far side of Charlestown. A first step would be to restore the 100KPH speed limit on this road which was downgraded to 80KPH not for safety reasons but for political trickery. They thought they could put pressure on Eamonn Ryan to go ahead with improving the road but he told them no way. Freight has moved off the railways long ago and is not going back, that idea is nonsense, where are the freight yards, the cranes to lift the containers, a fleet of lorries at each end of the line to move it on. Distribution networks have evolved since the closing of the railways and are not going back in time to the slow old days of state run railways. The future for these old railways is tourism, and will never be anything else, walking, cycling tracks, enjoying the country.
