That does not change the fact that historically Western Ukraine was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Eastern Ukraine was part of the Russian Empire. The idea that the whole of Ukraine consists of one unified group of people has no basis in history.

Europe can put troops into Western Ukraine and I don’t think Russia can do anything but they will not be able to put troops into Eastern Ukraine because the majority of the people in that region have closer links with Russia.

Also with America providing over half the funding for NATO if Europe acts alone then the argument for America to withdraw from NATO becomes stronger. After all if Europeans are willing to send, fund, and maintain troops in Western Ukraine then why should America pay for something that Europe is able to do itself.

The politicians who are proposing this believe the Russian people will rise up and overthrow Putin if European troops are placed in Ukraine but they will not be able to persuade the Eastern Ukrainians to do that which makes it very doubtful they will ever persuade the Russians to do that. So everything will just remain the same. Eastern Ukrainians will choose Russia and Western Ukrainians will choose Europe. In other words the historical Austro-Hungarian and Russian divide will remain.

Easy enough to send European troops to Western Ukraine but there is no point in believing that Eastern Ukraine will be part of a unified Ukraine because it was always part of Russia in the sense that the majority have closer links to Russia.

I think a lot of people who don’t study history tend to view these issues as new problems caused by recent events. If you study history you will eventually come to the conclusion that identity, resources, and boundary, are the defining factors of all conflicts. To imagine that you can change someone’s identity to satisfy your idea of what identity should mean is erroneous and there has never been one example of that happening in history. Which is good news for Tibet because China will fail. If only we could accept the same inevitable result for our own attempts to achieve the same effect.

Sorry I know that is not what many people on this sub want to hear but after thirty of years of studying history I tend to see the same patterns emerging with the same outcomes.

I’m kinda skeptical of this. Macron seems to always have the biggest mouth, but actual action tends to be disappointing. Accoridng to Kiel institute, their total allocation is only 4.8 billion or 0.178% of GDP. That’s either 24th place by percent GDP or 10th by raw allocation. Which is both lower than even Japan, which isn’t even in EU (10.5 billion total allocation/0.229, rank 4th/21th).
