Welp. Do I just cross Turkish civil war off on my bingo card of the 2025 or not yet?

Details:
Erdogan’s main rival Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoglu, whose diploma was canceled yesterday, was detained on allegations of corruption in tenders. Together with him, 100 more people were included in the investigation and detained.
Minutes before Imamoglu was detained, he said the following on his social media account:
“I am sorry to say that a mind that is trying to usurp the will of our nation has gathered our beloved police officers in front of our house. Hundreds of police officers are being abused and a great tyranny is being carried out. I entrust myself to my nation. I will definitely continue the struggle. I will never stop my struggle with the person behind this power.”
Ankara Metropolitan Mayor Mansur Yavas, the second biggest candidate of the opposition
“Everyone who defends the rule of law, democracy and the will of the people in this country should know that these attempts against an elected mayor are never, ever acceptable. The cancellation of a diploma yesterday, the detention of the police and their team who gathered in front of our Mayor Ekrem’s house in the early hours of this morning… This picture does not suit a state governed by the rule of law. Although the reason for the detention is not clear; what is the indication of rushing to detain a mayor who previously went to the courthouse and gave a statement? If you are truly seeking justice, you must first remain loyal to the fundamental principles of law. It should be known that no intervention against the will of the people will go unanswered. Our democracy will suffer the greatest damage from these practices carried out with unlawful methods, pressures and threats. However, we will not be silent! And let no one forget: Our Mayor Ekrem is not alone!”
**Updates**
**07:19 CET** – The opposition’s second biggest candidate, Mansur Yavas, made a statement saying, “There is a very high possibility that I will be detained as well.”
It was announced that İmamoğlu was detained as part of a terrorism investigation and a criminal organization investigation. This indicates that there is an investigation that will lead to the appointment of a trustee to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. The way for the appointment of trustees in place of mayors who are under terrorism investigation was opened a few years ago.

Every dictator’s playbook is basically the same, stir up problems outside the country so people don’t notice the mess happening at home. That’s what he’s doing with all the chaos in Syria.

It’s important that non-Turkish Europe protests this injustice and makes sure that there are consequences for such blatant undermining of democracy. It will be inconvenient for Europe, especially in terms of Ukraine policy, but to be consistent and to show we are not motivated merely by self-interest, we must auction Erdoğan and his closest allies.

Disappointing, but unsurprising. I was really hoping that Türkiye would turn a leaf and backtrack their democratic backsliding seeing as how they seem to be interested in joining the EU, yet here we are.

This is likely US path in a couple more years. I doubt Trump will ever leave presidency by his own will.
