At its essential, Ukrainians don’t need to respect Russians anymore. It’s not just Russian “greats” like Pushkin et al. who are unworthy of unquestioned respect at the outset from the Ukrainians.
The Russians have so irredeemably and violently demonstrated their pathological complex with respect to the Ukrainians that it’s only *rational* now for Ukrainians to be wary of, if not hostile to, Russians. The Ukrainians’ shunning or “canceling” of Russians and their “culture” is totally their right as a sovereign people.
Meanwhile, the Russians have set the bar so high for themselves that it’s on them alone to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that they are willing to take on *collective responsibility*, if not collective guilt, for acting on or enabling a [centuries-old policy of genocide on the Ukrainians](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russification_of_Ukraine).

Asking a Ukrainian to have respect for anything Russian is a bit of an ask at this point. That doesn’t mean there aren’t good Russians, but it seem unfair to ask them to respect Russians as they are trying to massacre them and their country.

The best part of this argument is that people who insist on the beauty of russian literature and poetry never read a single sentence, and the ones who hate it know it by heart.
