This Tax Free payment was due to expire at the end of March.

About 35,000 Ukrainians get accommodation under this scheme.

It is similar to the “rent a room” scheme, as the owner can stay in the residence.

I dunno how a feel about this , we have helped so long enough if it was up to me they need to find job after 6 months and stat paying themselves , we have to many students commuting long distances because they can’t afford to rent a room  and are missing out on student life and experience and we dont have unlimited money to spend , this is again just guaranteed money to landlords

I too would like 600 a month towards my living expenses.

It definitely needed to be reduced. Why would you rent to anybody else, or for any less, when you get a a government guaranteed €800 through this scheme

Disappointing to see the payment cut but I’m happy that the supports are to be extended. Ukraine is on a knife edge after the clown show administration in the U.S. abandoned them in their hour of need.

I’m happy to see my taxes going to support these people and their plight.

So, this is where I would say there is genuine concern for equality and fairness. Ukrainians here are entitled to work ASAP. There’s no long procedure. I believe it’s unfair they get 600 euro a month for living expenses and also be allowed to work full time. What fulltime worker gets 600 euro a month tax break?

We have students coming here paying 100s of euro a month for a bed and only allowed to work 20 hours a week.

We absolutely and help and we should. But the system is really unjust.

How can they tax an Irishman and just give it to a Ukrainian who is working beside them. I’m all for helping but blanket cash payments is just wrong and builds resentment. At least means test it.

Just a reminder that these payments help landlords and homeowners – that’s who gets the money. Ukrainians get a place to stay but it’s primarily Irish people getting the cash.

As for Ukrainians getting work, that’s great in theory but it’s kind of hard to sell to employers. Their visas have expirations and can’t be extended by employers. So time gets invested in training this new employee and then they have to leave.

It’s been three years now and the rather obvious idea of training Ukrainians in various construction trades to a) solve our housing problems and b) help rebuild Ukraine just keeps not happening. It’s almost like the government is disinterested in solving the housing problem.

its drove the rents up here in Donegal a massive amount. HAP is different for every county, why isn’t this scheme??

    10. I don’t like it being reduced, but I’m also conscious of the fact that the scheme doesn’t negatively affect me.

It does negatively affect many people who want to rent rooms in people’s houses, particular in rural areas. In those areas a Ukrainian tenant is much more appealing to the homeowner. Guaranteed rent which is in many cases more than you’d even get from an Irish person or other migrant, and with the Ukrainian you can even get them to top it up. You could end up getting double the actual market rate.

Oddly enough the group which are probably most negatively affected by it are other migrants in rural areas.

It isn’t fair, but at the same time I don’t like the idea of any Ukrainians being removed from the housing they have. I dunno…the whole situation is shit.
