“As hundreds of thousands of Serbians take to the streets of Belgrade to protest what they describe as rampant corruption and cronyism in President Aleksandar Vučić’s government, the European Union is once again facing accusations that it’s putting its economic interests ahead of the values it preaches…”

    2. ConnectionDouble8438 on

Serbians protest for financial/economical reasons, not against geopolitical stances of their government.

    3. The Serbs are allied with Putin. The EU probably fears escalation, possibly with the Serbs launching another war against the Bosnians with Russian assistance:

      >Serbia’s president, Aleksandar Vučić, has posted a message on social media about an unspecified threat to his country, which has prompted comments about whether he was talking about involvement in an imminent conflict…

      >…”It is hard to say what news we have received in the last 48 hours which directly threaten the vital national interests of both Serbia and Srpska,” Vučić wrote, referring to the Serb majority entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

      >Vučić announced that in the coming days, he will inform the people of Serbia about all the problems that lie ahead. “It will be difficult. We will fight. Serbia will win,” he added, according to a translation, without specifying further.

That may be a bluff. But European leaders may be remembering the downward spiral to war that began in Serbia in 1914.

Because the entire world has fallen apart and without the USA moralizing non EU countries about how to run their own shit is just an exercise in losing possible allies to Russia or USA, both hostile in one way or another.

    5. Haventyouheard3 on

My understanding of the history of EU’s relationships with Serbia is not great but my understanding is that they aren’t too happy with us and that they’d probably prefer not to have outside forces meddling.

    6. Isn’t the main issue here that there is no unified political opposition? It’s more like general discontent.

This is in contrast to for example Hungary and Georgia.

Remove vucic, pay your war debts and then we can speak

The only thing where EU, Russia, USA, Ukraine, China and UAE are aligned is support of dictatorships and corruption in Serbia.

    9. Navodar94 on

The EU’s attitude to Serbia repeatedly shows why the EU is in such a mess: what do you stand for is demonstrated by what you do, not what you say. For 12 years the EU has been tiptoeing around the fact that the Serbian regime has been violating fundamental values of both the EU and the Serbian constitution. Where were the sanctions against the regime? Where have been the punishments, the rejections of the Vucic regime? You chose “stabilitocracy” over democracy and now you have neither.

Neither you have the lithium nor Serbia’s recognition of Kosovo’s independence. Trump is in the house, Russia is resilient, and China is kicking your ass technology-wise. Instead of integrating the Western Balkans as is, you left us out and now you’ll have only more trouble here unless you make a U turn and fully support Serbian students and get Serbia into the EU following the Cyprus model after Vucic is removed from power.

because the EU is kinda busy with a ton of other disasters and it is already a miracle if states can juggle more than one catastrophe at a time. At the moment it seems every month a new one comes around the ocrner

    11. It looks like the current Serbian regime satisfies all sides. On the other hand, the protesters have no specific demands, they are just tired of Vučić and don’t like the opposition either.

    12. rlyjustanyname on

Most europeans just don’t have the capacity to care right now. We are busy trying to come out of this geopolitical realignment without perishing. I doubt the EU comission feels like they are in a position to drive Serbia even further into Russia’s arms on the off chance that the Serbian protestors install a better government that will be easier to work with.

    13. ActualDW on

For the same reason it responded to the occupation of Ukraine by building pipelines with Putin…the big EU countries are self-serving, short sighted, and don’t give a shit about anyone else.

The same reason why it kept silent when Azerbaijan invaded Armenia.

Right now the EU (both its political institutions and the general population) are in a very tricky situation.
We’re scouting for allies but keeping our cards close to our chest.
If the EU released an official statement in support, it would only stoke the flames of division from Vucic saying “aha!, see?, it really is all a globohomo decadent west NATO plot!”.

    16. SvalbardCats on

      Simple. Easy peasy logic.

Serbia aligned with Russia -> Serbia is bad. -> Whatever happens in Serbia is not important.

    17. Serbia is not yet a member of EU but a candidate. Currently these are internal issues in Serbia that Serbian people will have to find a solution for.

    18. N64GoldeneyeN64 on

Because the EU is a bunch of hypocritical nanny-states worried currently about Trump absolutely skull fucking their economies to shit when he pulls the US out of NATO and they cant afford their own nationalized programs anymore

    19. TheDungen on

Cause Serbia is not an EU country?
Also when is the EU ever upfront about what they’re doing? When the EU does something you only ever find out afterwards. Its how they work.

    20. Wh1ter0se1337 on

Why has the eu been silent on the massive protests going on in romania and their meddling into the elections there???

    21. Magdalan on

What do you mean? It’s been on the news here the first day the protests started.

    22. Simple answer is that it’s another front.
We are in war with Russia.
We are in war with US.
      We got Orban.
Additionally and this is my privet observation I think Europe is terrified of balcan countries. It’s a element of Europe that might explode any moment and make an incredible mess and destabilize the whole continent. Then if you add my first 3 points you undesrstand it absolutely terryfing for our leaders. Ah and Serbia is considered as a Russia and China ally as well.

    23. Ready_Engineering116 on

Because of lithium. EU silently supports state terrorism just because of lithium

    24. CTPABA_KPABA on

There is unwritten agreement between EU, Russia, USA and China that Serbia is free for grabs. That is sort of fault of our government because they were not serious about EU demands for entring union (chapters). For that, they need massive traitor (Aleksandar Vucic) who will give everything to anyone, just so he can stay in power and steal and work with criminals, against people of Serbia. They are ok with that as long as it is semi stable and no war has been started.

un mouvement populaire n’est rarement diffusé dans des médias possedé par des milliardaires, cela pourrait donner des idées au peuple.

    26. purpleisreality on

Don’t forget that we are talking about the same EU, which co operated in the greek financial crisis with the corrupted government with led to the crisis, officialy lied and was corrupted. They also punished the greek people in 2015 for voting a party irrelevant with the previous corruption with an even harsher austerity. They didn’t enforce at the same tine any anti corruption measures along with the austerity (this I hold it against the EU)

The EU is always the last to comment in internal political turmoil, and notwithstanding what I feel for them because of the greek crisis, I kind of understand and respect it too. How can they stand against a democratically elected government as both our corrupted governments are? Bear in mind that although the european prosecutor has intervened for Tempi, due to his/her position, the EU officially still haven’t said a word about our train accident.

As much as i hate both of our governments for killing people, the EU is doing the right thing, because they should not meddle in internal matters, if they start doing this it will be undemocratic and against the wishes of the electorate. This must be the case, that our voting is respected. Or else when they start to interfere in political internal matters they become an opposition.

    27. voyagerdoge on

Its silence is the best support imaginable for the protesters.

    28. longsgotschlongs on

So you ask why the EU doesn’t support the protests, but when people point out why you just downvote them? Do you want to hear the answers or do you want an echo chamber?

    29. Waibelingen on

People arent really happy with their own governments in the rest of Europe either. Dont want people to get any ideas on the homefront now.
