If your business model is selling to Europe at a premium, using those profits to subsidize your prices in Russia and China, and you stop selling to Europe but keep selling in Russia and China, then you will make a loss. It’s not a sustainable business.

I highly doubt that Europe will agree to buy Russian pipeline gas for pre-war prices. If it happens, which is a big if, it would have to be at a hefty discount. Hence Gazprom’s business model has to change in any case. There’s no Power of Siberia 2 without Germany paying for it.

In my mind, monetary growth is the main driver in the capitalistic system most of us live in today, including Russia.

If the current political authority is found to stand in the way of profits, the system would quickly replace it by someone else that allows profits to grow.

Why doesn’t this work in Russia? How can Putin prevent this from happening? Where does Putin’s power come from?

    6. but the sanctions don’t work, how in tarnation is this possible then?

It’s seems like ancient history now, but this was one of the reasons why it was so hard to believe that Russia would actually invade Ukraine. Russia could have literally just sat back and grown rich selling natgas to Europe. They even spent all that money investing in pipelines to do just that. Instead they choose to throw it all way for a couple of fields in Ukraine. Just a plain stupid decision.
