Simon Harris was watching Netflix so now he’s got to make statements
Ok Mr Burns.
Hmm his behaviour in the Dáil is quite toxic towards female TDs
Amazing how behind the curve on things Goverment are until there is a crisis or something is trending.
The issue with children and smartphones is known for years know.
Reactive as always.
Honestly agree with no letting kids have smartphones or tablets, but what sort of silly shit is this – he’s gone and watched a fictional Netflix show and is making public statements about it, possibly informing public policy down the line.
I feel like I’m living in a comedy, how are our politicians so shite?
This is such a moral panic. People are worried about Andrew Tate but the only people who watches him are middle aged journos
Toxic masculinity has become massive problem in Ireland and it badly needs to be addressed. The increase in the mistreatment of women isn’t a coincidence
Bill gates kids didn’t get smart phones till 16
I absolutely hate that phrase. So it’s only young boys affected ? Smartphones and instagram false reality are really bad for girls but we don’t call that toxic femininity .
At last something I actually agree with Simon on.
Whiff of satanic panic off this
Simon Harris steps outside in the morning, takes his hand out of his jacket pocket, licks his index finger, holds it up in the air and checks which way the wind is blowing
Better late then never honestly.
I teach in the European schools and things have changed these last 5 years. Young teenage boys in particular are just regurgitating vile stuff, whether they believe it or think of themselves as edgelords.
The damage the current White House in the US is doing by platforming a racist rapist like McGregor and apparently lobbying for the release of the Tate brothers is taking this crisis into its endgame.
I’m happy a show had brought attention to this, I just hope it results in action.
He’s algo chasing himself with these inane soundbites.
This is the same fella that was caught on camera giving out to the female disability campaigner, what like, three months ago?
Hopefully Netflix make a series about broken health systems, or children with disabilities being left behind, or any of the other crisis that this country is facing. Maybe then the government will speak up about them
Oh lordy lord, I’m putting my phone down right now, I don’t want to catch TikToxic masculinity.
Did Simon just get Netflix or something ?
Aah yes more sound bytes ! That will change things. C’mon Simon you can do better, like outright lies. Not that you will be held accountable.
So this is how we get them off their arses? Ok so can someone knock up a quick Netflix drama about housing.
It really should be illegal for children under the age of 14 to have access to smartphones/tablets.
There is a good article regarding an experiment conducted by DCU about this exact same thing. I would recommend you read it if your first thought is “why is it just a male issue and not a female issue” or if you think only middle aged men are being fed this BS.

Or parents could be responsible and raise their kids properly
People got into trouble when I was a young lad without smart phones. Blaming bad behaviour on smartphones is a cop out. Good parenting helped with behaviour, and even with good parenting some kids were still just little shits.
Crime doesnt get punished now. Kids get away with anything they do now. They know it and everyone else knows it. Nothing to do with smart phones. There is no punishment for bad behaviour, so it continues and increases.
Harris wouldn’t know masculinity if he was punched in the face.
Toxic masculinity is not a new problem.
Does he really think phones are the sole issue?
Delaying access to smart phones, doesn’t change the fact that they will get acess to to them eventually.
Social media is a radicalization entine. The algorithms are designed to feed people more and more content to keep them engaged, which leads to people being radicalized.
What needs to be done is legislate at a EU level the algorithms that govern content recommendation of social media, if not elminate them entirely if we need to do so.

God.
This is coming from the lad who nearly punched a section 39 worker until he saw a camera on him. Yeah he would know all about the toxic masculinity
Jaysus what’s he going to say next? We should ban violent video games because they encourage children to do crime? Maybe people could try raising their fucking children properly or something, not letting them rot their minds away on tiktok all day long, maybe we could have a go at a bit of personal responsibility for a change?
Since Stephen Graham’s latest show – which was very good, but had a questionable/forced sub-plot about this topic (the nonsense about emoji’s etc.) – there has been a big effort to manufacture scaremongering about this.
Kids – adolescents primarily – need to be taught the importance of civil liberties and how to protect/defend them, and are at an age where they need to be _brought in_ to discussing politics and defending their political views – not fucking nannied with their exposure to political discussion and their rights to speak curtailed.
They’re growing into adults, and they need to be increasingly respected and treated as such – and learning how to defend and exercise their rights is among the most important things they learn growing up.
The biggest threat to these kids is the current government which has _already_ destroyed their future – they will never own a home.
They are going to have to be the generation that actually fights back against that – because current generations are idle wimps, who are willingly on course to ending up on the streets and an early death.
Schools should start implementing classes on how to be social media literate from primary school onwards- how to spot things meant to radicalise you, or to entice you towards a certain pipeline of shit (conspiracy theories, gender wars, alt right shite etc.). A lot of adults lack these skills too, clearly.
These kids are coming across things you can’t even imagine on their phones and iPads and laptops. I got my first smartphone at 12 and that damaged my brain development for sure. I had unsupervised access to the internet on the family desktop when I was even younger. The internet is a much worse place now and once kids (with their underdeveloped brains) fall down these pipelines it’ll be harder to get them out. There’s also all sorts of nasty adults who abuse and groom kids who don’t know any better. The internet is not a place for children, but if you can’t keep them off it, the next best thing is to equip them to know what okay and what’s not.
