UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has stated that the White House pushed London to make critical remarks about President Volodymyr Zelenskyy after the Oval Office spat.
**Details:** UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer acknowledged that US President Donald Trump’s actions, ranging from imposing a 25% tariff on British steel to criticising Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, have caused “quite a degree of disorientation”. Starmer stressed that the proper response is not to yield to Trump’s provocations.
“On the day in which the Oval Office meeting between President Trump and President Zelenskyy didn’t go particularly well, we were under pressure to come out very critically with, you know, flowery adjectives to describe how others felt,” Starmer recalls.
“I took the view that it was better to pick up the phone and talk to both sides to try and get them back on the same page,” he added.
Starmer sent his national security adviser, Jonathan Powell, to Kyiv to advise Zelenskyy on rebuilding relations with Trump.
Starmer then called Trump to brief him on the progress in Kyiv and prepare for a phone call between the two presidents. Zelenskyy expressed support for Trump’s peacekeeping initiatives when the two leaders spoke.

It did seem completely manufactured in every way

I really appreciate starmer’s leadership in revealing this detail now which PMs would normally keep private, and leave for their memoirs. Obviously starmer believes that letting it be known now will help to discourage the USA from using it as a tactic?
It is a kind of small betrayal of trump by starmer, and as such a brave piece of leadership from starmer.

Of course Trump wanted (and expected) other nations to side with him.
Such an arrogant asshole.

Headline is misleading af.
*“On a person-to-person basis, I think we have a good relationship,” Mr. Starmer said of Mr. Trump, whom he first met over dinner in Trump Tower last fall. “I like and respect him. I understand what he’s trying to achieve.”As for Mr. Trump’s actions — from imposing a 25 percent tariff on British steel to berating President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine — Mr. Starmer said he recognized that the president had generated “quite a degree of disorientation.” The right response, he said, was not to get provoked by it.*

Trump’s going to continue to be seriously outmanoeuvred by more intelligent people – and ‘more intelligent’ is most of the other world leaders. Starmer’s now outed him and also deterred him from trying such tactics again.

Canadian here, it’d be much appreciated if he spoke out on the 51st state nonsense. Not expecting him to commit billions of dollars of support or peace keeping troops a la Ukraine, but a few public words regarding threats of annexation towards a peaceful nation wouldn’t be amiss.

Makes me wonder about the other countries that supported the Us’ behavior towards Zelensky. How many didn’t really have the luxury of having space to maneuver?

There is a broad swath of opinion saying that Starmer is handling Ukraine war and White House well, given it is a fiendishly hard bunch of cards he has been dealt. So I note with interest that GB News and sympathetic right wing blowhards like James Melville are describing Starmer not in those terms but as a narcissist, a small man pretending to be a big man, …..seeking to undermine what he is doing and thereby doing Putin’s work destabilising the west for Putin. I respect Starmer a lot for his international stuff and ai think his leading the coalition brings credit to Britain. Fuck KGB News.
