In Ireland (& in the West in general), we try to protect all disenfranchised individuals / minorities from discrimination. It’s a progressive move that has its merits & and drawbacks.

Lads, I’ve been away in Bulgaria for most of the week following the Boys in green and missed all of this.

      Can anyone give a TLDR?

I’ve a lot of sympathy for him, it’s disgraceful that he felt the need to leave social media because of abuse BUT the flipside is, he started that video basically saying that discussing these things wasn’t in his wheelhouse. So why make the video in the first place? At the very least he should have been prepared for *some* sort of blowback.

The only way to discuss immigration is with honesty. The days of tiptoeing around the issue out of fear of leftist cancel culture are fading fast. Their grip is slipping, and people are waking up to their authoritarian tactics. Garron Noone spoke the truth—it’s time more people did

No matter what stance you have, there will always be a group that will disagree with you. Especially online.

    6. He blamed immigrants for the increase in crime.

He succumbed to anti immigration sentiment probably Russian propaganda against Ukrainians

The issue is millionaire TD landlords and tech billionaires

      It’s really that simple.

I think he is funny but not the brightest

he made some completely reasonable points about immigration. We have too many non EU/Ukrainian asylum seekers here over the past 3 years and it is causing problems.

THis is isn’t controversial, it’s incontrovertibly true. It doesn’t mean we haven’t got thriving and successful immigrant groups who have settled in Ireland over the past few decades and it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t take some asylum seekers each year. It ust means someone let it get out of hand and should hvae been much more forceful at pushing back a few years ago when the numbers sky rocketed.

The fact that this guy was given so much bullshit by so many idiots is depressing, but predictable. TikTok is not a place to try to communicate nuanced ideas.

Listen, it’s hard, but starting with fact, statistics, and expertise, is a very good way to go. If you don’t know where to find facts and statistics about an issue, it’s very likely you should not be asserting your feelings about it as facts.

Going on “everybody knows” dogwhistles is going to earn you some well deserved blowback. Save that for when you’re talking with friends. If you’re going to take a huge platform and give your thoughts, you need to do the homework first.

I’m gutted this has happened, but I’m also sick of people who drink their own koolaid to the point they think they’re more clever than everyone else, and without the slightest bit of homework decide they’re going to give the take that makes everyone happy.

Any professional comedian leans pretty quick.
      NEVER read comments.
Post your stuff and walk away.
As we’ve seen from the USA and Covid, 50% of people hate your guts and think you should die a vile death.

    10. Having a nuanced good faith conversation about complex topics on the internet is very difficult (imo I would say nigh pointless) Regardless of having several different groups of people jump down your throat no matter what you say. Not to mention you have no idea who you are talking to or what they are like or their knowledge and thoughts on the matter or if they are even a real person.

I do not know why people were so interested in his opinion, I think he is very funny but its a shame he made a comment on it when this isn’t this field of expertise and no matter what he says its not gonna be to the benefit of anyone.

I’ve never understood the Irish fascination with the subject in terms of immigration, considering the populace history of Ireland as a whole.

It baffles me that people would not take some aspect of historical empathy towards it as a subject and perhaps apply some logic.

It appears to be a subject that creates huge division.

I’m an immigrant to Ireland and have been here for 21 years. I know plenty of others, and we all have the same conversation.

Why is it such a big deal?

    12. cynical_scotsman on

I can’t believe this is still going on. He presented ignorant and incorrect views of immigration near the end of his video that has subsequently made him the poster boy of these right-wing ghouls.

“Driven off from social media after a far-left pile-on. Free speech is over!”

Seen this shite parroted all weekend as well. He chose to close his own accounts. I’ve seen no evidence of any abuse. I have a lot of sympathy for the position he put himself in and I have enjoyed his content, but running away to let this fester all weekend is on him. All these cunts feel empowered now. What about the mental health concerns of immigrants in Ireland who may have followed him?

    13. guinnessarse on

Young people can’t get on the property ladder and cannot achieve what was a normal life 30 years ago despite working full time.

Many are voting with their feet and leaving.

The levels of immigration we have experienced are unprecedented, with 3% of the population entering the country in 2023. That is absurdly high and infrastructure is obviously going to suffer from it. Not to mention the large cultural differences between some of the new arrivals and the Irish.

Many on this sub say that we have discussed immigration at length but in the mainstream they have only ever acknowledged the positives of it. In the general election only Aontú hinted at their possibly being a downside and even at that they were a very soft touch.

Very serious reform is needed but many on Reddit would rather pretend that everything is fine once the topic of immigration comes up and call people racist or xenophobic that offer the alternative point of view.

    14. TomRuse1997 on

It wasn’t well thought out or structured. No idea why he did it.

I feel bad for him and hope he’ll return soon, but speaking on the topic without being properly informed when there was no real need for it was really silly.

    15. zZombieX on

I find this even more awful as I think he came off relatively neutral too. He basically said that there are two side to this argument, both are valid and need to be discussed, and regardless of whichever side of the argument you agree with, you have to admit that there is an argument to be had here.
Left, right, up, down, it doesn’t matter. There’s obviously an issue here and, in order to figure out exactly what the issue is and how to solve it, we need to be adult enough to talk about it.
