      Context:

“Erdoğan criticized the street protests that began with the detention of Ekrem İmamoğlu on March 19.

He referred to the protesters who have been in the streets since March 19 as ‘vandals.’” Despite the fact that police has been using brute force against peaceful protests.

“The sole responsible party for our police officers injured in vandal attacks and the billions of liras in damaged public property is the leader of the main opposition party and his entourage, who called for street protests. The political accountability will be addressed in Parliament, and the legal accountability will be pursued in court.” said Erdogan.

President Erdoğan’s remarks about protesters defiling mosques and turning them into taverns reflect a broader narrative aimed at delegitimizing the protests against the arrest of Istanbul’s mayor, Ekrem İmamoğlu, which many view as politically charged rather than based on lawful actions. This rhetoric is part of how the government attempts to frame the opposition as threats to public order during significant unrest across Turkey following İmamoğlu’s detention, drawing attention to the underlying tensions between secular and religious sentiments in Turkish politics.

Not a New thing he claimed us “terrorist, traitor, atheist,Zarathustra…”

    4. tomorrowgreen on

As always. Anyone surprised? Also maybe a small group of people does something inappropriate (who knows who they are). The media projects that as if all the protestors act like that.

    5. Blackrawen on

In the Gezi protest(2013) he claimed that that a veiled woman was beaten by a group of 70-100 people, who were naked from the waist up, wearing leather gloves and black bandanas on their heads, and beat her for 52 seconds. And he said that he’s going to release the evidence next sunday. More than 10 years passed and there are no evidence released….

Ah yes, religion, the favorite tool of dictators and rapists around the globe.

Vandals ? I was sure he would use the “foreign agent” card. So old he don’t know the modern procedure.

He’s upset because the youth is walking away from religion and he can’t use it as a weapon?

Emine was dancing in one of them ! I saw it. She loves Mezdeke 😂.

    11. ShitassAintOverYet on

Note: No one did shit at mosques during the protests let alone drinking in one.

In fact today a radical Islamist group held dinner at a mosque super close to the protest area and still nothing happened.

Good. That’s what every Mosque/church/synagogue should be. 300 years of enlightenment and we still tolerate that nonsense…

    13. KakaoFugl on

His followers probably heard the word “vandal” for the first time. Scum of Turkey.

The ease in which this dictator lies and weaponizes religion is abhorrent

“They are eating the cats and dogs …. and they are turning the fucking frogs gay!”

Anything else they absolutely did do?

    16. flying_fox86 on

Hang on. Turning a mosque into a tavern isn’t vandalism, that’s a remodeling project.

We had our kitchen “vandalized” a few years ago. looks great.

Yeah even religious people are not falling for this shit in 2025.

He literally said the exact same thing in Gezi protests. The imam of the mosque falsified the claims saying that they were false.

    19. architecTiger on

He made deal with PKK terrorists to disperse masses during Gezi uprising . He would do anything to cling on to power.

It’s actually fascinating how similar Vučić and Erdogan are. It’s like all dictators use the same playbook.

AITA for laughing at this. Ok i am sorry what Turkey is going through but this is crazy funny.

    23. Potaeto_Object on

Honestly, I don’t think anyone would be upset if he got shown the door. The EU doesn’t really like him, the US doesn’t really like him, and the Russians don’t really like him. He has constantly betrayed and pissed off everyone and only got away with it because Turkey has a big military.

    24. ninjastylle on

Whats funny is he got to the position he is in now the same way. He was also a mayor of Istanbul. Protests, mass media blasting it as well and he became a president.

Not saying that he didn’t rob the people out of wealth and freedom, just a funny coincidence that I remembered.
