#Top Danish MP Slams F-35 Deal, Warns of US ‘Security Risk’
One of Denmark’s top defence voices has taken a dramatic swing at the United States, saying the country made a huge mistake by buying American fighter jets and warning that such deals could now put allies in danger. Rasmus Jarlov, who chairs Denmark’s parliamentary defence committee, didn’t mince his words as he admitted regretting the choice to spend billions on the US-built F-35 stealth fighters.
Jarlov, a key figure in the decision to buy 27 of the advanced jets back in 2016, says he no longer trusts Washington to be a reliable partner. The Conservative MP fears the US could one day pull the plug on support or even threaten to disable the planes remotely if Denmark refuses to toe the line. In short, he believes American weapons are now a security risk.
He made his explosive comments on social media, addressing widespread speculation that the F-35 could contain a so-called kill-switch, giving the US the power to shut them down from afar. The Pentagon has denied it flat out, but Jarlov remains sceptical. “We obviously cannot take your word for it,” he said, pointing to how the US briefly cut off aid to Ukraine and could just as easily withhold spare parts or technical support to strongarm its allies.
The issue goes deeper than fighter jets. Jarlov suspects Washington’s eyes are still firmly fixed on Greenland, the vast Arctic territory Denmark oversees. President Donald Trump famously floated the idea of buying it back in 2019, and while the proposal was laughed off at the time, Jarlov now says the only real threat to Greenland is from the US, not China or Russia.
“I can easily imagine a situation where the USA will demand Greenland from Denmark,” he wrote, warning that the threat of deactivating Danish weapons could become a bargaining chip.
It is not just Denmark raising eyebrows. In Canada, Defence Minister Bill Blair has hinted at second thoughts over the F-35, especially as tensions simmer following new US tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods. Portugal’s outgoing defence minister has also signalled caution, saying the country must be mindful of shifting geopolitics when choosing its military hardware.
Despite these misgivings, the F-35 remains one of the most sought-after fighter jets in the world. With its slick stealth tech and cutting-edge capabilities, it has been snapped up by countries including the UK, Italy, Australia and Israel. But alternatives are creeping into the spotlight. France’s Dassault Rafale has been gaining popularity, and South Korea is developing the KF-21, though it is not yet in the same league.
For Jarlov, the message is clear. As Europe prepares to pour money into new weapons, he says it must break its habit of looking westward for firepower. “We must avoid American weapons if at all possible,” he declared, urging Denmark and its allies to find other options before it’s too late.
New American admin hates the EU it seems like, so it is prudent to shift to local defence industries.
>The account identified as “JD Vance” addressed a message at 8:45 to @Pete Hegseth: “if you think we should do it let’s go. I just hate bailing Europe out again.” (The administration has argued that America’s European allies benefit economically from the U.S. Navy’s protection of international shipping lanes.)
>The user identified as Hegseth responded three minutes later: “VP: I fully share your loathing of European free-loading. It’s PATHETIC. But Mike is correct, we are the only ones on the planet (on our side of the ledger) who can do this. Nobody else even close. Question is timing. I feel like now is as good a time as any, given POTUS directive to reopen shipping lanes. I think we should go; but POTUS still retains 24 hours of decision space.” – [src](https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2025/03/trump-administration-accidentally-texted-me-its-war-plans/682151/)
It’s good when decision makers recognise their errors, doesn’t happen enough.
It’s fine to make them, but continuing to try and rationalise your errors is just being dumb.
What other options are realistic right now? F35 is the only fifth gen multi role fighter available to European countries.
America is supporting Israel. Israel are being attacked by the Houthis, who are armed by Iran. This has more to do with US/Israel alliance than the UK. The extreme right wing government in Israel mirrors that of the US.
And still Denmark has a policy where their defence policies are dictated by the US. This is just ugly populism and means nothing in a year from now
Without a standing army, all these complaints about the US from European countries are toothless.
It’s a tough spot to be in. What makes US military go brrrrr is all the associated systems – nobody has battlefield intelligence like they do – nobody is close in effectiveness at picking out what actually needs blowing up.
So yeah…you can buy a Rafale or Gripen or whatever…but then you’re for sure running an intelligence deficit…or you get an F35 any maybe, someday run an intelligence deficit.
It’s not a problem that can be solved over the near term. If you want independence, you need to spend soup to nuts…you need your own SpaceX and your own top tier programs to put lookie-loo assets in orbit.
Really fucking expensive, and it will take a long time.
Commentators are mostly vastly underestimating the cost and effort it would take for genuine independence.
