The BBC Turkish Service has published statements from CHP leader Özgür Özel, in which he criticized UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and the Labour Party regarding the arrest of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu.
In an interview with the BBC, CHP leader Özel said, “We feel abandoned,” and added:
“How can the cradle of democracy, the UK, and our brother party, the Labour Party, remain silent about this? We are truly heartbroken.”
In his interview with the BBC, Özel stated:
“(UK Prime Minister Starmer) What justification does he have, what reason does he have? While the whole of Europe is reacting, we truly cannot understand how the UK Labour Party and Starmer have remained silent on this issue. We feel abandoned. They are taking the Mayor of Istanbul and putting him in prison, and the UK is saying nothing. Then what kind of friendship is this, what kind of sister party is this? What kind of joint defense of democracy is this? The UK, the cradle of democracy, and our sister party, the Labour Party—how can they remain silent? We are truly heartbroken.”
Greece is the cradle of democracy, isn’t it?
He’s correct, Europe has been awfully quiet about this.
Europe is worrying about defending itself from an autocrat, and therefore is playing nice with a different autocrat who happens to be an ally.
The logic doesn’t make sense to me
That’s IR and geopolitics unfortunately
Europe will remain silent as long as erdogan keeps all the refugees in Turkey. If erdogan is removed, the new government in Turkey will not keep them.
Basically, Turkey is now a buffer zone for Europe, holding all kinds of illegal immigrants Syrian, Afghan, Pakistani, or from wherever, while erdogan and his allies use the small amounts of money they receive from Europe for themselves. They sustain these refugees using the taxes of the Turkish people. Even if the refugees want to leave, they are not allowed to.
The biggest fear of European governments, and the reason they continue to support erdogan, is that a new government might open the borders, allowing all those people to flood into their own countries.
Offend Erdogan and he’s got many levers to pull in order to hurt the UK and Europe. He could stop supporting Ukraine, he could deport a million migrants to Greece and Bulgaria, he could start many new fires in the Middle East.
They support Erdogan. As simple as that.
Turkey announced that it would deepen cooperation with Europe, and Turkey signed a contract with British Petroleum.
Turkish people: Yeah, Turkey is number one in the world! Europe cannot live without Turkey.
EU people: Europe needs Turkey, and we should welcome Turkey to join the EU! All those who oppose Turkey‘s joining the EU are Russian robots!
A month later,
the EU remained silent on the demonstrations of the Turkish opposition.
Turkish people: The evil EU has betrayed the Turkish people!
EU people: How can the EU government be so hypocritical! But to be honest, Turkey cannot join the EU yet.
In fact, the EU and Turkey have not changed, but the people often want to get benefits but refuse to bear the costs.
Turkey’s drones are all produced by Erdogan‘s son-in-law. The consequence of Turkey’s military industry and security cooperation with the EU will inevitably make Erdogan more stable,.
but the EU people want Turkey‘s drones to protect themselves and want Erdogan to step down in same time.
and turkish people is happy to see turkey become stronger and stronger and more and more important fo EU and NATO but want EU and nato support them when they protest.
This is an obvious contradictory demand. Politicians may be satisfied verbally, but in actual operation, no one can meet this contradictory demand.
The Turkish people want a strong army and a Turkish government with international influence, but they also want the Turkish government’s strategic allies to support them when they take to the streets.
EU citizens want a Turkish government that can use inhumane means to prevent refugees from entering Europe and treat its citizens humanely and democratically. This is obviously a contradictory demand.
I’m not sure anyone except Allah can do this. After all, these requirements are as difficult as creating a boulder that you can’t lift yourself.
This man is an idiot like Kilicdaroglu was. There is nothing a foreigner can do do persuade Turkish votes. Zero geopolitics knowledge.
Starmer or others is playing it right.
I didn’t know that Europe’s democracy is so cheap. Erdoğan could buy it. Even though Erdoğan made a coup and destroyed Turkeys democracy and built otocratic regime, Europeans ignored it or even funded it also paying visits like celebration. I’m sure tomorrow they will complain about Putin xi etc. Like they have rights to complain.
Daddy Erdo will save Europe from Putin. They do not care democracy
U.K citizen here. Starmer is a spineless embarrassment to the U.K. He’s always banging on about human rights here, but fails to support them elsewhere if it’s politically the tiniest bit awkward for him. He’s useless on the world stage.
nothing surprising, classic european hypocrisy.
they need Türkiye’s army and for that reason erdogan is now the good guy
if the US hadn’t kicked their asses, they would have started saying again: “let’s kick Türkiye out of nato”
>!LOL!<
I think Europe remembers what happened after the 2016 “coup”. After it failed, Erdogan took note how most of Europe and America did not stand up for him, but Russia did.
Right now, no doubt Europe is afraid the protests will be quashed, after which they’ll have to deal with an angry Erdogan who’d be outraged over Europe taking a stance against him.
It’s sad and cynical. But not surprising in the least.
Condemn it and be mocked for the classic “sternly told but do nothing against it” move. Don’t condemn it, and people are upset you didn’t do the classic move. Fuck erdogan and his dictatorship tendencies, but politics mean you cannot speak your mind without causing rifts and instability. What is right is not always what is best, sadly.
