Just wait until you hear about how much the one in Limerick is going to cost.

Seems like a pretty normal figure for a project that will likely cost north of 250 million.
Do people honestly think a project costs nothing until a shovel hits the ground ?

The money is one thing, but nearly 20 years and no construction is the real scandal. Seems to be lots of churn and redesign and legal proceedings, and opposing public groups saying the work will hamper river views.. Jesus wept.
Fermoy put in floor defences years ago and it’d worked wonders and before they they were constantly flooding. The barriers can be erected on demand, so no real visual impact to the river. If the nimbys got their way there, fermoy would be like Atlantis by now…

This shouldn’t be a controversial proposal anyway, but this number isn’t that large.

This is like the aftermath of the RTE thing, where people started posted stories of completely normal things that RTE spent money on. Of course a flood defense work has upfront costs.

As someone who has worked in flood relief schemes, this article gave me PTSD for multiple reasons:
-The media trying to make a perfectly reasonable figure for a scheme of the magnitude and complexity of the Lower Lee scheme sound scandalous – and in the meantime feeding into the mindset of so many people in Ireland who are scared of spending public funds on badly needed infrastructure.
-The local groups who think that they know more about the effectiveness and cost benefit of the case than the experts.
-The randoms who think that a tidal barrier solves anything. Spoiler, it rarely does. They are very expensive, complex to operate and can worsen any kind of river led flooding.
Best of luck to the project team! They’ll need it.
