    1. somoe additional context: the chief editor of the publication he works for says that the journalist has been designated as wanted by turkey

Presumably, the Erdogan regime has had their eyes on him before due to prior critical publications, notably during Swedens drawn out process of NATO-ascension, during witch there were some particularly provocation protests in Sweden, critical of the Erdogan regieme.

(context for that being Swedens long standing neutrality in combination with voices for international democracy and human rights as well as having a significant kurdish minority population)

This is concerning. Do we know the charges or reasons for the detention?

    3. ARTICLE:

Swedish journalist Joakim Medin, who was detained on his arrival in Turkey on Thursday to cover street protests, has been jailed, his newspaper’s editor-in-chief told AFP on Friday.

      #

Asked whether Medin had been jailed, Dagens ETC chief Andreas Gustavsson said in a text message, “It’s correct”, adding that “we have not been informed about actual charges yet”.

Medin was held when he landed in Turkey where he was going to cover anti-government protests, Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard said on social media, adding that she and her colleagues “always take it seriously when journalists are detained”.

Turkish media said Medin has been accused of having “insulted the president”, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and of being a “member of an armed terrorist organisation”.

“I know that these accusations are false, 100 percent false,” Gustavsson wrote on his X account.

Gustavsson said earlier that Medin had sent a text message saying he was being “taken in for questioning”.

“Joakim should be released. Because freedom of the press is under attack,” Gustavsson added.

Turkey has intensified its crackdown on anti-government protests which broke out after the arrest and jailing of Istanbul’s popular opposition mayor Ekrem Imamoglu.

More than 1,879 people have been detained since March 19, Turkey’s Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on Thursday.

Police also detained two Turkish women journalists in dawn raids on their homes, the Turkish Journalists’ Union (TGS) said Friday.

The move came just hours after the authorities released the last of 11 journalists arrested in dawn raids on Monday for covering the protests, among them AFP photographer Yasin Akgul.

Turkey deported BBC journalist Mark Lowen, who had been covering the protests, after holding him for 17 hours on Wednesday, saying he posed “a threat to public order”, the broadcaster said.

In a statement late Thursday, Turkey’s communications directorate said Lowen had been deported “due to a lack of accreditation”.Swedish journalist Joakim Medin, who was detained on his arrival in Turkey on Thursday to cover street protests, has been jailed, his newspaper’s editor-in-chief told AFP on Friday.

Some people did not understand that certain countries should be avoided, especially since they must have suspected this, but good luck

Very saddening news, as a Turk I apologize for my country’s actions, and thank you to the brave Swedish Press for risking so much to have our voices heard ❤️ 🇸🇪

The death of journalism so I agree but if they are imprisoned I don’t know who will do journalism and unfortunately they will be used as bargaining chips but good luck

This happens in journalist line of work, I hope there won’t be any fabricated charges. I don’t think this measure will be able to successfully suppress media it’s not a small country

The move followed an investigation into a January 2023 protest in Stockholm, where a mannequin representing President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was hung in effigy in front of the city hall.

According to prosecutors, 15 suspects, including Medin, a foreign affairs reporter for the Swedish news service Dagens ETC, were believed to have carried out, organized and reported on the act.

The investigation also referenced Medin’s social media posts featuring weapons, flags, and members of the PKK/YPG. The Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK is considered a terrorist organization by the US and European Union, and Turkey regards the armed wing of the Kurdish Democratic Union Party of Syria — known as the People’s Protection Units or YPG — as an affiliate of PKK.

He sounds more like a political activist rather than a journalist to be honest.

Just impose embargo on Turkey and halt any trade with them! Do it Europe!

Hahahah take this you terrorist, satanist, imperialist agent spy!! That will show you! /s

At this moment I’m appalled at their audacity. Are they (Erdogan and his goons) not afraid of any backlash? We get used to arrests of domestic journalists but they have never doubled down on arresting foreign journalists. It seems to me that either they lost control and in full panic mode or Erdogan trusts/knows someone like Trump will pardon his government’s actions .

But why do so many Turkish diaspora love Erdogan?

My flatmate is a huge Erdogan lover here in the UK but hasnt lived there since the 1990s. I think the president could kill his mum and he’d still vote for him.
