      I think he’s bored and is doing random shit for a bit of a laugh and to crack some jokes at the billionaire club. That entire tariff sketch of his from today looked like some quiz show, where the audience has to guess who will be tariffed today.

      Apparently it’s just a vague calculation on trade deficits. Nothing to do with tariffs. The 10% is just some made up bullshit for countries that the US doesn’t have a meaningful trade deficit, so you know.. round up to 10, because this isn’t serious math or anything.

      It is literally the trade deficit. They took the trade deficit % for each country, called it a “tariff”, and justified it by saying both were “unfair”, so the percentages could be the same. I am not kidding; you can find the spreadsheet proving it elsewhere on Reddit. These people are total idiots.

      I shit you not, each “tariff charged to the USA” is literally either the trade deficit or an arbitrary number of 10% (whichever is higher).

      EDIT: or an arbitrary 50% in the case of South Korea.

      They didn’t actually calculate tariff rates + non-tariff barriers, as they say they did. Instead, for every country, they just took our trade deficit with that country and divided it by the country’s exports to us.

      So we have a $17.9 billion trade deficit with Indonesia. Its exports to us are $28 billion. $17.9/$28 = 64%, which Trump claims is the tariff rate Indonesia charges us. What extraordinary nonsense this is.

      In calculating the tariff rate, Trump’s people only used the trade deficit in goods. So even though we run a trade surplus in services with the world, those exports don’t count as far as Trump is concerned.

      When Tяump first got elected and started attacking Canada, he claimed the 46 billion trade deficit was a 250 billion dollar “subsidy”. Canadians were shocked and outraged by the blatant lie. We’ve had time to react and get our battle plan in place. Now he is doing the same thing to the rest of the world
