**Saint Pierre and Miquelon: Few Exports and Heavy Tariffs**

Another territory that raises questions is the French archipelago of Saint Pierre and Miquelon, which is fiscally independent. Along with Lesotho, it is one of the places on which Americans impose the heaviest customs duties 50% despite the territory having minimal exports to the United States. How is that possible?

It appears that the Trump administration’s calculation method was based solely on the 2024 trade balance a figure that does not accurately represent the true nature of trade involving the French territory.

The calculation seems to have been done by taking the American trade deficit with each targeted territory and dividing it by that territory’s exports to the U.S. For the archipelago of Saint Pierre and Miquelon, **2024 was an exceptional year due to a single transaction in July, when someone in the United States purchased $3.4 million worth of goods mostly seafood.**

On the U.S. Census Bureau website, there are archives of more than 30 years of trade with the French archipelago in the North Atlantic. These show a balanced trade relationship over the past ten years at least, with exports of goods to the United States being almost non-existent or very minor.

So while the impact for Saint Pierre and Miquelon is currently minimal or even nonexistent that’s not the case for other regions like the European Union. French President Emmanuel Macron has declared that Donald Trump’s decision is “brutal and unfounded […] and we are determined not to let this stand,” he added.

For the small territory of Saint Pierre and Miquelon, within the context of a potential deepening trade war, the question remains: What would be the future impact on its residents, who rely entirely on imports from Canada and the European Union?

      Personally:

Saint-Pierre-et-miquelon is one of the most tariffed territories by trump because of one shipment of seafood. Weirdly enough, other french department (not fiscally independent) like French Guiana, that are part of France proper and the European Union, don’t have the same tariff rate as the rest of the EU but have special one of their own.

    2. What does this mean?
Nothing for America. Nothing for global trade.
      Everything for comedy.

I just love that the US has the ultimate American stereotype as president. It’s a gift that keeps on giving.

Trump loves to tax small islands with no significant importance, but taxing his boss over in Russia appears to not be his interests

It’s becoming very obvious, that this list has no rhyme or reason to it.

Trump Administration has more Freaky people than a Traveling Carnival.
Group of misfits, fringe people, people easily bought because they are Freaks. They don’t fit in with anyone.

They should enact a trade deal with Heard island. The penguins won’t object to some fish.

Ok I think this is how it went. Trump has announced his master plan for liberation day. But he has nothing and he’s running out of time, he can’t ask for help because he’s a very stable genius and has been bragging about it for 30 years. So he turns to chatgpt. “Make me a tariff plan to end trade deficit”. And he goes with that. Without even checking if there were uninhabited islands on the list.

And the republicans cheered and lauded, the world markets collapsed, and everything went to shit.

This is what happen when you remove the checks and balances part of the government and replace with “yes please” men.

St Pierre is French and therefore EU, no? Not possible to tariff it differently than the rest of the EU market.

What I’m reading is that helping the US with eggs would increase their tariffs on us. So, no thank you?
