Interesting that the media are beginning to realise that change is coming. Trump is going to remake the world, one way or another.

It’s also the opposite of what we should be doing in this scenario, we should be encouraging growth in our local economy and developing new trade partnerships, not suffocating it with higher taxes.

Are we not the country that is about to pay for people to stop tourists groping a statue? Spending €2billion on a hospital, hundred of thousands on a bike shed, 30+k NGOs, €1Billion on asylum accommodation…
The waste is beyond belief and the snouts are well and truly in the trough.
The Irish government is incapable of cutting spending, they only know how to splash the cash.

It’s always the case that whatever government is in place during the start of a recession is screwed, even if the recession is caused by external factors. They are in big trouble at the next election.

Benefits would have to be cut in such a scenario. Cutbacks to NGOs would produce further savings.

I think people are completely misunderstanding what Trump is doing. Whether you like him or not (and I’m *not* saying that I do), he’s crystal-clear about his worldview and intentions:
– America is the most powerful country on earth. The rest can suck it.
– America can survive, thrive and get enormously rich on its own
– America needs strategic control and (where possible self-sufficiency) in terms of key things like minerals, energy, essential goods, chips etc.
– America does not want direct confrontation with Russia or China
– Americans shouldn’t pay *any* taxes, the rest of the world should pay Americans taxes
– America wants to protect and where possible expand its borders
– America has zero interest in any global institutions or laws (including NATO and the UN)
– etc etc.
These are not surprises, they’re *policies*. It’s what he wants to do and he’s doing it. He’s been very, very clear about all of this for a very long time.
The main other thing I see consistently ignored is hidden in the “Trump is economically illiterate / a failed businessman / a serial bankrupt” argument that smug commentators are so fond of trotting out.
If there are 4 things Trump is a *genuine*, world-class expert in they are:
What’s *obviously* going to happen at some stage is that he’s going to somehow default on most of the National Debt by taking the US into some kind of strategic, super-hokey, structured national bankruptcy.
Economists, politicians, academics and all the rest of the usual suspects will clutch their pearls and say this can never happen.
Ignore them.
This is *exactly* what’s going to happen and what most of the current policies are ultimately about.

Trump leads a group of sychopants who will follow whatever he is doing until the mid-term elections. I doubt the ability of the Democrats to get their house in order ahead of that date. Can the Democrats reveal a leader removed from the Clintons, Obamas etc who will revitalise their party. If they can and the Republicans suffer a major defeat at the mid-terms then Trump will find it difficult to continue on this path. The margins are narrow despite Trumps talk of a massive win at the election. Could Senator Chris Murphy represent a clean break from the mess the Democrats are in.

If we go in to recession things are going to get very very nasty on the whole immigration front. If people are getting hit hard in the pocket and the government are still spending huge money on IPAS/immigration etc, I could see things getting very nasty and could see a right leaning party like Aontu exploding in popularity.. I think the country will become very tense and divided..
It’s also soul destroying thinking this bonanza we had for the last decade or so, with huge government surpluses has not resulted in a better country, with better infrastructure (much) and services…
