In 1894, the [Oostende-Vienna Express](https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ostende-Wien_Express) began, connecting Oostende to Vienna. In 1900, this line was linked up with the Orient Express, extending it to Istanbul.

Oostende-Istanbul ceased operations in 1939 (85 years ago) due to WWII and never re-opened. However, the Oostende-Vienna connection still continues today with the [ÖBB Nightjet](https://www.nightjet.com/en/reiseziele/oesterreich/wien), although it now only departs from Brussels and Liège, not Oostende.
