They don’t want to make a deal; they will keep shifting the goalposts.

    2. achterlangs on

They are trying so hard not to understand what VAT is…

    3. HighDeltaVee on

Vietnam offered the US a full zero-zero tariff model this morning.

They were promptly told that they also had to pay reparations for historic inequality.

There is *no* tariff solution which will be acceptable to them.

    4. Nervous_Sun4915 on

How’s that supposed to work? VAT is decided by each member state and applied on product categories, not countries of origin. As usual, this is complete nonsense coming from the White House.

    5. Away_Advisor3460 on

So basically the US wants special treatment on taxes that everyone else pays, and also to import unsanitary shitfood nobody wants*. What a bunch of whiny snowflakes.

*(but which will sell, because it’ll be really cheap and marketing will cover up the horrible phytosanitary practices and poor hygiene underlying it)

The same White House trade adviser who is anti vaccine and tried to over turn the 2020 election?

    7. Beneficial-Movie83 on

And they have to start wearing Maga hats and get Trump tattoos …. good faith and reasonable requests.

    8. bbbenadryl on

That’s obviously not going to happen. The US is miscalculating pretty severely if it believes a willingness and preference for a negotiated solution is exposing weakness. Going by the leaked Signal chats I am not at all surprised by their read. It’ll come back to bite them in the ass.

    9. ShortGuitar7207 on

VAT is not a trade barrier because it applies equally to domestic products and imported products. It’s just a local sales tax as many US states have.

US shouldn’t have universal healthcare, Europe advises.

    11. Massimo25ore on

Don’t they have any economists with a glimpse of knowledge and common sense at the White House?

Holy crap, what a bunch of brainless amateurs.

    12. Stabile_Feldmaus on

Imagine having the audacity to try and dictate the tax policy of sovereign countries. Now that our offer was rejected (again) I hope harsh retaliatory measures are coming from the EU. Hit US tech and services!🇪🇺🇪🇺

    13. Kaionacho on

Ok cool can now **please** hit back with full force? If they don’t want to shake hands, we should cut of their hand.

Come on have a spine, China had one. And I respect them for that

If we can’t do that and make even further concessions, im gonna start learning Chinese, cause this shit is over for us

    14. insomnimax_99 on

      >VAT

They have sales tax in the US – VAT is literally just our version of that. It applies equally to domestic and foreign goods, so idk how it can be a trade barrier.

This is the problem with the whole “negotiation” approach. It makes the Trump government think they can take the rest of the Hand. Especially since Trump has surrounded himself with economic imbeciles, you cannot expect any kind of reasonable discussion with them.

    16. Peter Navarro is extremely political and a full-on protectionist. He fully understands things like VAT, he’s just lying on TV. Disregard.

    17. Eyjafjallajokull2 on

The actual administration in US is so inbreeded that they are almost a clone

    18. Thready_C on

It’s quite clear they are negotiating in bad faith, they don’t care, we have to hit back

    19. Social_Needer_91 on

Can we just shut the U.S. out of everything already? Just let them die alone as they seem to want…

    20. Excitium on

Alright, we gave them an out and they didn’t take it.

Can we hit them in the fucking nose now?

    21. Elrecoal19-0 on

Sure buddy, only if US removes absolutely all tariffs and taxes from EU companies 🙂

    22. DvD_Anarchist on

STOP MAKING FUCKING CONCESSIONS AND DOING APPEASEMENT. IT DOESN’T WORK. LEARN FROM CHINA. MAKE AN ALLIANCE WITH CHINA AND EVERYONE ELSE. FUCK THE US HARD.

    23. gounatos on

Don’t they want the tariffs to pay for removing income tax and bringing “tons of manufacturing jobs back in the US” (which will now be done by robots since there are also no immigrants) or something equally stupid? That’s why they are asking us to lower/remove VAT. Which ofcourse isn’t happening

    24. Most of the world uses and has used VAT for decades now. Is this only an issue because someone told Trump that countries use VAT and he doesn’t know what that is?

    25. Eland51298 on

Okay, we all know we won’t get along with their current administration anyway so let the war begin(trade war of course)

    26. No-Butterflys on

So they want the EU subsidising US goods? How about the EU agree if the US gives tax rebates on EU goods. Same thing.

    27. If they really want this, while applying tariffs currently.

Why don’t they just… implement VAT instead of using tariffs?

That would go hand-in-hand with the zero income-tax to be replaced by tariffs, in this case would be replaced by VAT.

Because let’s be real, in the tariffs are high companies will stop exporting to the US, if they stop exporting people will spend less on foreign goods which translates into less tariff income and less income means less government expending including subsidies including innovation and so on so on…

Eventually it leads to a really bad loop.

One day it will be s very closed economy with not enough economic leverage from tariffs since internal products wouldn’t be taxed.

    28. JarJarBot-1 on

Are they just pretending to not know how VAT works. Anyone with a high school reading level and an internet connection can easily understand how VAT is trade neutral. Am I supposed to believe that people with the power to crash the global economy overnight do not understand VAT or should I assume they do and that they are acting in bad faith.

    29. Healthy-Effective381 on

Ok, and USA needs to have free healthcare, unemployment benefits and proper vacations for workers. But those are internal issues just like VAT.

    30. weltwanderlust on

And White House needs to fuck off.

      From the article:

      > but non-tariff barriers, which also include food safety regulations, are “orders of magnitude” more important than tariff rates.

If we feed their chicken or beef to our pets, we can be accused of animal cruelty.

    31. medievalvelocipede on

lol it’s Peter Navarro, the ‘economics expert’ Ron Vera.
