“European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed President Donald Trump’s 90-day pause on his reciprocal tariffs, and said the EU is committed to working towards “frictionless” trade with the U.S.
**But von der Leyen made clear on Thursday that the EU sees its trading future as largely outside of the U.S.**
She said in a statement posted to X that “Europe continues to focus on diversifying its trade partnerships, engaging with countries that account for 87 percent of global trade and share our commitment to a free and open exchange of goods, services, and ideas.”

You don’t want tariffs but still, we have 35% tariffs on cars.

Well said, but I would love to hear that retaliatory tariffs for ‘liberation day’ are still to come. 10% is still a lot higher than EU charges for imported goods from US. Even before negotiations – we need to show to extortion will never work and either Trump will accept mutually beneficial deal or can GTFO.

If they don’t decrease their use of US’ services and big tech, it’s pointless.

The EU should aggressively lobby for American companies assembling Chinese parts for reexport to move their manufacturing to Europe, especially Eastern Europe. More stable and cheaper workforce and Polish, Czech and Slovakian workers are more skilled than Yankees.

“clear message”…the EU stance will not be clear as long as we have a political system where the majority can’t resolve crucial issues because it is required the unanimity.

Trump acts like a deranged bully and then will probably say to americans “They don’t want to trade with us because they are mean”.

Honestly I no longer care about EU has to say. They bark a lot but don’t bite and the whole world knows that.
Even if they talk about diversifying their trading partners, they’ll forget about everything and they’ll be back to trusting Trump and licking U.S.A. ass as soon as Trump slow downs with non-sense for 1 or 2 weeks

What pause? There is still a 25% aluminium tariff active, and a 25% on autos, and a 10% on everything… The rumour is that Trump intends to tax pharmaceuticals too and God knows what else.
Any trade deal, new or old, with the americans is useless. Because they don’t respect anything, they are no better than the russians.

Can’t blame her. How can you trade with a country that flip flops so much on tariffs etc. if you don’t know how much it costs to trade with someone day by day or week by week it’s difficult to plan for a long term trade relationship.

Good. We can’t trust Trump as his costant flip flops make him an unstable partner
