> CSU leader Markus Söder has given up his calls for a return to nuclear power in Germany following the coalition negotiations. ‘Nuclear energy was no longer an option,’ said Söder in Munich on Thursday, summarising the negotiations with the CDU and SPD.
> There had been intensive discussions on the topic, but it had not been possible for the CSU to realise it. From an economic point of view, the resumption of operations in the nuclear power plants that were recently shut down, which the CSU had massively demanded during the election campaign, would no longer make sense in the foreseeable future.
> Söder said that it was therefore all the more important that the planned coalition partners had agreed on a significant expansion of gas-fired power plants. With significantly more gas power, there would also be more energy for the south of Germany.

It’s tiring to see all this widespread incompetence…
We’re dealing with ignoramuses who can’t foresee a nation’s long-term needs. Today, it’s all about immediacy.

He just lied to his voters before the elections and is now „correcting“ his stance.
That’s the core message of this news.

The whole nuclear discourse was extremely polarising, so perhaps the silver lining is we can finally put it to rest and restore focus on renewables and sustainable solutions going forward.

Finally he admists what everyone else knew already. All conservative politicians are the same: lie lie lie before the election, as soon as it is over (resp. government is about to be formed), their plans are not feasible anymore but noone could foresee it!

election cycle is over. No need to bash green party anymore.

This mud eating specism of an underdeveloped fleshmonkey used the last years to relentlessly bash the Green party for “their” decision to end nuclear power in Germany – completely ignoring that it was the conservative CDU government under Merkel who decided the final end of nuclear power in Germany.
But now that he is in the government, he suddenly “realizes” all this pro-nuclear talk was just populist bullshit to rally his conservative voters and attack the Greens party.
Lying is really part of their core identity, you can’t say it any other way after this election.

Yes. Just like everybody, including the CEOs of the German energy companies, have told him multiple times before.
Söder is such a populist joke. After Fukushima he personally demanded (!) the nuclear exit and now claims he has always been for nuclear and attacks journalists who point out this discrepancy.

Finally some common sense. Nuclear is the past and only for lobbyists getting money. Sun/Wind/Hydro/Geothermal are the future.

Let’s not forget that back in 2011, Söder already threatened to resign as minister for the environment if Germany would not abandon nuclear by 2022.
That was the Merkel II administration, CDU-FDP coalition.
He parrots everything that is popular if it wins his party or him in particular votes.

Even more so from Maggus who wanted to resign if the CDU didnt shut down all the reactors. Something they then did.

Some context for my non-German friends: During the last three years, in which a Green minister (Habeck) was in charge of energy and economics, the CDU/CSU have been raving about how it was a mistake to shut down nuclear energy, how Habeck was an idiot for pushing for it (the exit had also been decided by the CDU), and how we need to reinvest in nuclear energy. It’s been one of their central topics.

Söder is the guy who threatened to blow up the government, when NPP weren’t immediately shut down after Fukushima, off the party that shut down 11 of 14 remaining NPP, not the green party that extended the runtime on the last 3.
Söder also will consider seperation of bavaria from Germany, if there is any talk about storing nuclear waste in bavaria.
Because in bavaria geology needs to be politically approved.
and only in the vast mountains of Schlesweig-Holstein near the border to denmark, deep enough mines can be found to store nuclear waste.

A nuclear power program isn’t like switch on and off. Even the reactors we have aren’t safe to operate anymore, and you don’t just build new ones in-place. Also, there are only a handful of companies which would be capable to pull off such a project, and even fewer people with the balls AND expertise to take responsibility and lead nuclear facility projects.

They just kept the voters happy during the election, of course nuclear wasn’t coming back.

Sensible position. Going back to nuclear would just have worse return on investment than using that money for renewables and connections.
Germany made a mistake by closing the reactors on an anti-nuclear ideological principle, but it would make a second mistake by restarting/building new reactors on a pro-nuclear ideological principle.

Nuclear isn’t feasible. Energy companies don’t want it and it would cost billions and take years to built new power plants that the government would pay. And the government would need to subsidise it. Everyone knew this was never gonna happen.

For the Germans: this is important, because it’s really obvious.
That’s how Söder (or his staff) operates. He is a populous post facts politician. Before he was in the opposition against the greens and argued they were responsible for all this – while he personally threatened with his resignation if the rest of the government would not agree to exit nuclear when he was in power.
It’s really that simple:
> Sollte sich Bayern auf einen späteren Zeitpunkt für den Atomausstieg als 2022 festlegen, habe “dies tiefgreifende Konsequenzen” für das Kabinett und auch für ihn “ganz persönlich”. Es ist eine Rücktrittsdrohung, auch wenn das Wort Rücktritt nicht fällt.
Then during the Energy crisis in the opposition against the greens (who were in the opposition the whole time after declaring the nuclear exit 20 years into the future with a plan to replace the capacity, which the same CDU/CSU-FDP government axed before):
> Das Abschalten zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt bezeichnete Söder als Fehler und als Sünde.
__His__ fault. He was one of the most vocal about this. And now he’s been arguing the greens were at fault while in opposition. And for some reason so many Germans thought we should have them in government again.
And now? Yeah, well, suddenly the greens were right. But let’s build gas plants instead.
