      >Kallas is not the first senior EU official to suggest that talks over fishing rights should not block a security deal. In February, European Council President António Costa said the two areas “cannot be put on the same level”.

We all are, except some French and Swedish politicians I guess. Shows how unserious they are about European security

It was always a hot button topic for the British, or other countries that haven’t joined the EU like Iceland and Norway, but I have to ask; considering the British fishing industry saw a massive decline following the exit, surely *now* they’re gonna be a bit more lenient on the demands, right?

      … right?

I think they have time until next month for a agreement. So we will probably hear/see a post about that every day…

Perhaps the UK should apply for membership in the EU. That would likely solve a lot of these sorts of problems.

til that fish was never really important in Finnish foreign politics.

But it’s the EU who made it important. I can’t tell whether this is supposed to be a jab at her own side, or if she’s implying that the UK are being difficult by not just giving in and giving the EU whatever it wants.  I hope it’s the former, but it’s not like we’ve never seen the latter from someone in the EU.

It was important, but not as important as the Brexiteers pretended it was.

Nothing but another dead cat on the table to point at, and blame Brussels for
Being a nation (and indeed at one point an empire) based on our naval credentials, it’s very easy to get people impassioned about fishing and “our shores” even though our Fisherfolk have lost out on shared access to a much wider array of fishing waters due to Brexit

It doesn’t surprise me that they were baffled by this particular hard line in the sand

Britain needs their national food fish n’chips safeguarded before they can proceed with talks.

According to many people in this sub over the last month the fish for defence pact story was inVeNtEd By BrItIsh TaBLoIdS. Did someone forgot to tell Kaja Kallas?

The UK, especially under Starmer, is hardly interested in improving ties with the EU and will find whatever excuse they can to avoid it. UK Prime Ministers always seem to prioritise their ‘special relationship’ with the US and it seems pretty clear that Starmer is far more interested in making a deal with Trump than with the EU.
He has spent the last weeks offering tax cuts to Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos in order to improve ties to the US.
Compare that to how dismissive he is of improving ties with Europe and it seems clear where his heart is.

France have a particular interest in France..
Almost the same mentality of trump and America.. they always expect special treatment even though the point of the EU is to be fair for all members, France always wants a bit more..

    13. I’m all for squeezing the UK for all its worth when it comes to agreements and deals between the EU and UK, they are the ones who left afterall, and they are the ones who have gone down the shitter since then.

That said, security is way too important for this squabbling and trying to block any security agreement over fishing rights is fucking ridiculous. If France wants to position itself as the leader of the EU then they need to swallow some of that french pride.
