      Translation:

Berlin, Istanbul. The governing red-green coalition in Germany is blocking the delivery of around three dozen Eurofighter combat jets to Turkey. Handelsblatt learned this from multiple sources familiar with the confidential internal government discussions.

A key reason cited within German government circles for denying the export license is the arrest of Turkish opposition leader Ekrem İmamoğlu. The political rival of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is facing corruption charges. However, the Turkish opposition claims it is a political conspiracy.

There is sharp criticism of Erdoğan from the German government camp, with some referring to it as an “attack on Turkish democracy.” Therefore, it is deemed the right decision to halt the arms deal, sources say.

Yeah, allowing the sell right now that it was the UK or anyone else would be a political suicide anyway even for Erdogan honestly.

Seems like BAE and Airbus eurofighter line will be even more at risk of closing since at least for BAE, the UK government hoped that export would do the trick.

As far as I understand this is the outgoing government.

So it might be unclear if it will hold?

If only we were as fast and decisive when it comes to American dictators

Just to give a little bit of background, so people have an idea why this matters in Germany:

We have about 2,5 Millionen citizens in Germany, that are considered Turkish or having Turkish roots.

Of those 2,5 Millionen people, approx 1,4 Millionen are considered immigrants, approx 1,1 Million are descendants of a Turkish immigrant. [source](https://www.destatis.de/EN/Themes/Society-Environment/Population/Migration-Integration/Tables/immigrant-history-selected-countries.html)

Thus they are a considerable large part of our population, almost 600k more than the next biggest group who are from Poland. Especially the second generation descendants are well integrated and many have passports for both countries.

    6. Honestly I see it as right decision. Turkey is a doctatorship country in disguise.

Someone is going to be buying Germany new f35s out from under them.

Curious. While I’m happy that the government sees the results of their oppressive behaviour even on international relations, this puts our defense in a strain which is concerning for me as a soldier. Let us see what Erdo will do. Will he finally release Imamoglu or will he knock good ol’ uncle Trump’s door for F-15EXs? Time will tell.

So literal dictatorships, human rights abusers like Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait could get EF but we cannot? Qatar police literally uses grindr to catch LGBTQ+ people, Saudi Arabia cuts opposition journalists to pieces etc… Shining example of democracies. Our government was stupid enough to work with Germany, Germany is not trustworthy when it comes to defence and that’s the reason everybody ditches them from their defence projects. We should buy F-15EX’s or return to the F-35 deal. Relying on Germany for maintenance, parts etc… is just plain stupid.

That’s why Germany is not a reliable partner for european defense projects.

If we produce the new generation air fighter with them, they could decide at anytime to stop export when they want

Kurdish opposition leader gets imprisoned for a decade for no reason. Turkey supports ISIS and invades Syria and bombes AANES 24/7, supports Azerbaijans war against Armenia: Europe keeps selling every weapon, tank and jet they can produce.

Kemalist opposition leader gets imprisoned: Suddenly Germany stops exports.

      Funny how that works.

    12. EU countries should take more seriously our obligations to Greece when engaging in relations with Turkey.

It’s run by a dictatorship, turkey shouldn’t be getting any Western equitment.

Can the exports be sent elsewhere, so some business still happens ? Ukraine might enjoy those, etc. I only remember their pilots apparently being trained on F-35s though.

Turkey blackmailed us when it came to the accession of Sweden into NATO, now it‘s our turn do make demands

    16. haphazard_chore on

Never, ever, ever, ever, should we work with Germany on anything we want to sell afterwards. Just look how many French Rafales have been sold compared to the Eurofighter! Germany just blocks every opportunity even now that they’re kinda old tech.

I am 100% behind any reduction and suspension of killing machines sale in general regardless of who sold and who buy it, But it is rich coming from Germany after their unconditional support for Israel to continue massacre civilians and commit war crimes. Please stop acting like you have any moral values, the hypocrisy is nauseating.

    19. Other-Comfortable-64 on

So Germany do understand that you cannot support authoritarianism, yet they support genocide.

While this is bad news for the UK initially, as it would be helping to build them, it is great news for GCAP as no one will touch FCAS with a bargepole.
