$11.8 billion is not high stakes. But it’s a lot of money for the amount of generating capacity. And it will, inevitably, cost more than expected and be a number of years behind schedule. So the fossil fuel industry is laughing.
It would be cheaper and faster to spend the money on solar or wind power. It would also reduce the long term risk of decades long reliance on someone to supply the fuel for the reactor.

Why the hell is the US company even an option???? Shouldnt the company chosen be completely independent?

Go with France. The US would think nothing of stopping all technical support and software the moment the US wants something. US would have no problem terminating electrical supplies to intimidate and bully. The US is not a trusted partner by any measure.

11.8billion dollar? That we all know won’t be under 15-20 billion in the end and that’s without the disposal of the nuclear waste for just 1200MW or 2400MW in maybe 10-15 years after the start of construction?
Seems like Slovenia has too much money that they invest into expensive tech with no actual energy output for a long time, instead of looking for way cheaper and faster to install energy technology. Also just thinking about having to rely on just one nation for a huge chunk of their energy sector? Haven’t we learned anything from 2022? smh.
We’ll hopefully see what Slovenians themselves will have to say about that in a referendum on the topic.

And Croatia, 50% co-owner of the Krško plant is doing…. exactly nothing to follow this up on their half of the plant. All we have is the energy minister talking about “the future is in SMR-s”, and ignoring the issue at hand. Croatia should either invest in its half of the plant, or build a new one fully in Croatia.
But that would require planning and strategic thinking, which we seem to have completely abandoned on an institutional level.

As a EU member… should not be the contract granted to another EU member country? Why would they consider an American company, given the current circumstances?

I would think any European nation would be loathe to do business with a U.S. company due to Trump.

Why would anyone consider a US company for anything?

Give all to the French.
No, I don’t know sheep about it.

I hate to say it but buying anything from the US right now is unwise. If anyone in France pisses off tRump, that alone could cut off construction at any point. Furthermore with the election of tRump the American people themselves, present company excluded, have proven themselves untrustworthy, shortsighted, and at best, ignorant.

USA can’t be trusted again. There are too many clueless voters there. And now Trump is degrading the educational system further, to make the masses ready for dictatorship. Europe must become completely independent.

This should be getting more attention, I have a hard time understanding why the US company is still amongst the considerations.
If parts of Europe spend billions on reactors, the money should stay in Europe if possible.
It should be obvious. No need for a “battle “
Can we really talk about a clash between the USA and the France, or Westinghouse vs EDF, when Westinghouse is owned by two Canadian companies?
