      I think many people don’t realise how badly this is needed. We’re currently the only country in Europe and one of the very few in the world outside of Africa without *any* radar systems that can track aircraft.

      What air traffic control has right now only detects transponder signals, and you can turn that off with the flick of a switch. It’s basically a very long range version of FlightRadar24 and not much more.

      It’s not just about the military – it’s going to make search and rescue better, it’s going to make chasing down drug smugglers easier, it’s going to make managing airliners safer

      So we’re buying the radar system for hundreds of millions of euro, but we can’t respond effectively to the alerts it produces…

      This is a great first step, very happy to see our security being taken more seriously. We need to rapidly expand our defensive capabilities, it’s not aggressive to be able to identify threats and defend your citizens from them.
