And before the war, all of what comprised said “us” was fighting like crazy all the time. He might’ve been right about US policies benefiting primarily the US, but it was actually worse before the war as there was barely any cooperation. France surrendered in same war to a European power within days. Not like before US influence it was all harmonious.

“January 4” written by an American. Pretty much any European would have written “4 January”.

They make Europe a protectorate then blame Europe for taking advantage of them.

He was also right about British membership in EEC……..

It’s always good to know your history and listen to warnings. The world can, and is, changing fast.

America: From the land of the free and home of the brave to the land of the dumbs and home of the cunts.

    8. oh stfu europe enjoy building your military again 😒hopefully you don’t start ww3 now that you’re no longer in it 🤣

Honestly, I really don’t like seeing things as domination/being dominated only. Maybe I’m wrong, but wasn’t it cooperation too ?

Of course, there’s no doubt it’s Trump’s view, and I think we shouldn’t let the US trample on us.

    10. There’s only a way out in Europe is to trash with modernism, embrace Christianity once again for it has been what made Europe great and prosperous.

    11. LBJ also reminded him of the 70k American graves on French soil, to which he had no response but to agree.

I mean France has been warning EU a long time ago, even Macron was the first one to face Trump’s chauvinism and suggest to establish a European new NATO with no USA, and non of the European leaders listened to him, Europe need to let France to led the union and sideline Germany

Well, at least Europe received some money and was treated as a partner for several decades. Subjugation is the treatment that Latin America receives

A man who came to relevance because the Americans bailed him and his country out then spent his entire career whinging about the manner in which they did it.

Europe has become second tier to America because it kept tearing itself apart and since then has stagnated. It’s become old, it’s state spending is bloated, it’s economy hasn’t grown in decades and it’s dependent on foreign powers for it’s energy needs.

The fundamental problem with this new outburst of Gaullist outrage is that Europe still persists in the delusion that it became a second tier power out of choice.

What he didn’t foresee, however, was that the dominant power would become furious that we dared to submit to its protectorate, and then freak out and tell us to take care of ourselves.

Yeah, but don’t forget that De Gaulle was against and blocked all attempts at further European political integration during his administration, just look at the Luxembourg Compromise (which De Gaulle requested) with the introduction of the veto power and unanimous decision in the Council, which stalled the EEC decision making for years.

I wouldn’t say anything was imposed. The outcome was mutually beneficial and allowed Europe to disarm, build welfare states and so on.

Trump has changed that though. America will lose their power and Europe our peace dividend.

    18. TwistedReach7 on

He was not wrong, but it’s far more complex than this. Europe enjoyed the uprights of being sheltered by the american army and our economies grew incredibly until the first oil shock. Europe had simply abandoned its global power position and decided to follow the prosperity route, mantaining alive the illusion of nations; it can work as long as the US is on our side and they’re actually the global leader, but the decrease of american presence around the globe (due shale oil and gas being found in the US’ territory) and the economical surge of China have deeply changed the world’s order.

De Gaulle is and was part of the main problem (he was against the federation): european leaders not thinking globally

There’s no american base in France since 1966. You can also thanks him for what he effectively did.

And at the same time he didn’t want to have a European defence alliance, without the US…

“Europe is USA puppet” was element  Russian propaganda for literally decades. Just a curious fact.
