” In addition, Minister for Culture Patrick O’Donovan has said he would not welcome a tourist tax and “the last thing we need to do” is to add more costs to people ” and yet the government seems grand taxing the bollox off citizens in a variety of ways.

overriding the decision of local councils, democracy eh.

A tourist tax could replace rates for hotels. It would probably be a lot fairer.

How can they when they already allow the tourism sector spiral out of control.
It’s prohibitively expensive to come visit Ireland. May as well go to Portugal or Sain and you’re guaranteed lower prices across the board. You’ll get some sun too!

Ireland is very expensive for tourists already.

I’m not a tourism fangirl but I do think this is a stupid idea. I’m from Dublin and work in the city center and I can’t imagine for the life of me why anyone who visits from abroad would want to come back or encourage friends to visit. Dublin is dirty and ugly and irrespective of actual safety much of it doesn’t *feel* safe. Adding an extra charge will only make an already expensive destination even dearer for no good reason – many cities which have introduced similar charges or similar measures, like Amsterdam, did so because the number of tourists is straining infrastucture and effectively making life unbearable for the locals. Dublin doesn’t have this problem.
Hazel Chu appears to think that tourists get to benefit for free from amenities paid for by Dubs – with the sole exception of museums, tourists have to pay for public transport etc like everyone else.
I would love if Dublin had public toilets other than those in the shopping centres like Ilac and Jervis but I can guarantee they would end up being trashed and used for drug abuse unless there was a charge to use them, which defeats the purpose of this charge.
The govt and DCC need to concentrate on sorting out the social issues that plague the city centre – antisocial behaviour, homelessness, drug abuse, litter, petty crime rather than coming up with stupid ideas for how to more adequately fund a city rife with these issues.
And for those who think I’m exaggerating, I’d ask you to walk down Talbot Street from Connolly to the Spire on a monday morning and try to ignore the human excrement on the pavement, rubbish, addicts and the heartbreaking number of rough sleepers and tell me you think it’s wonderful. Hazel Chu trying to tell me a tourist charge will make Dublin a fairer place to live is actually insulting to those of us who see the needless suffering and feel intimidated in our own city every day.

It makes no sense when everything is already expensive to the point Irish people don’t holiday as much in Dublin nevermind international.
