Don’t think it will tempt enough of them to stay with all the other issues affecting life in Ireland.

Helen is a disaster. F..k Leo for ever giving her a job.

Seems like a good move. Let the complaining begin…

It’s a good move however it seems odd to only have it apply to newly qualified teachers.. Teachers who haven’t been given permanency after 4 or 5 or 6 years are the ones who are leaving the profession, not the newly qualified.

Still thousands of teachers on career break? I’ve an easy fix for sorting out the permanent contract issue for younger staff. Then again half the dail are teachers on career breaks.
It’s not allowed like this in any other area of the public sector. Maybe a year, but then your post is filled permanently.

Good now to address career breaks. 5 years is too long to have a teaching role be non permeant.

Teachers being pulled from Mary I to be full time teachers after one year is the real problem.

How long has Enoch Burke been in post?

What if the teacher isn’t the best and the school wants to let them go after the year is up? Are they forced to make them permanent?

This is a brilliant step forward. I teach, although in third level, and we have the same system for permanency. I’m lucky in that I recently became permanent but the stress involved with having a temporary position is ridiculous. Constantly worried about whether or not I will have a job in a few months time.

Great! Now make a joint Primary Education and Irish Education studies degree so that people who didn’t have the Irish from school can qualify and enter the work force!

What’s the situation on teacher numbers in Ireland, do we have too many, too few, the right amount ?

Finally something positive! This is good. There is much much more that needs to be done for education but this is good.

Of course, there’s a shortage and having teachers jump through hoops is behaviour for when there are enough.
