We need another judge Mary Martin. Back in the 90’s before penalty points there was a lad caught speeding near Paulstown, Co. Kilkenny a few times.
On his 4th or 5th appearance in front of her she took it to the letter of the law, which states you can be fined £50(before Euro) for going 1 mile over the limit. So she fined him £50 for every mile over the limit. Doing 80mph in a 30mph zone.
£2500 fine, 3 months to pay or 6 months in lieu and no leave to appeal. There was never any more about it so I have to assume he paid it or done the time.
At this stage we need fines linked to % over limit.
This has been proposed before but was shot down.
Is that a ban?
Would say I’d have at least 4/5 cars driving 2 inches behind me when I’m doing the speed limit (sometimes over it) every week.
