“The breakthrough followed British negotiators softening their stance on fishing, preparing to accept EU demands for a multi-year deal accessing fishing waters. The UK will reportedly grant a multi-year deal for European fishermen and freeze quotas, rather than reducing the bloc’s access further”
Adding this here as the title could be construed quite maximalist.

I think it’s laughable we’ve given into this Trump-esque negotiating tactic by (primarily) the French. We agreed this in the Brexit deal and they just don’t like what they signed up to.
But if it’s only agreeing to freeze quotas at current levels rather than pushing them back up it’s still significantly less access than they had previously so it’s not a terrible deal. Proof will be in the details as I smell damage control on that and whether it’s frozen at 2025 levels or previous levels, and whether we’ve softened other environmental rules or not.

Utterly stupid.
We shouldn’t reward bad behaviour. We should’ve told France that we’ll pull back to only the most basic of NATO obligations, and they can cover for our soldiers being pulled out of the 4 EU nations as well as our protection of Irish airspace.
If we’re not going to be treated like an ally by the EU, there’s no reason for us to act like an ally for them.
If the EU is going to put fishing rights over defence, they clearly don’t need British support all that much.

This is so regarded, I hate this sh*thole country… Either don’t be a pussy and join the EU or stay out and don’t let up petty concessions like this, its disgusting that the EU can do this in the first place, and is doing this. Brexit was probably the most regarded thing this country has done since joining the US in iraq. Somehow this has got to be worth it, otherwise what is the UK even doing.

Could someone explain to me what access to UK waters for fishing has to do with Europe buying British arms? How is fishing any part of these negotiations? Why are there even any negotiations in the first place about letting British arms be on the market; from what I can tell this isn’t even an arms deal, it’s just market access – why was that even restricted in the first place?
For the record I couldn’t care less about fishing rights and I’m glad that ties are being strengthened. But why on earth was this even being discussed?

Fuck the EU for making this demand, fuck Starmer for conceding it and fuck Farage who will take advantage of this.
Anyone who defends this is a fucking moron.
If this goes through it is giving ammo to Farage and co who will point out that it’s essentially the UK paying for the privilege of defending mainland Europe and putting British lives at risk.
It is multiple levels of stupid.

For how united people here love to act, this whole fiasco has been a perfect example of the disunity within the EU. Even this comment section has zero unity. Both sides shitting on each other instead of coming together and recognising the french took advantage of the situation for their own gain, and UK labour folded to it and continues to bend over for everyone and anyone.

When the first article came out about this, most of you discredited stating the EU wouldnt risk Europes security over something so stupid. All this shows is that EU is not that different from Trump willing to bully their friends.

Starmer snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
I agree we should be getting closer to the EU. But not at the expense of the conservation efforts we’ve done to our coastlines since Brexit.
For reference, I voted remain.
But having French trawling fleets back in our waters, decimating fish stocks and destroying sea beds is not something we should be giving up when we’re already helping with the defence of Europe as it is.
I’m all for defence. But fishing and defence should have no bearing on each other.
The fishing rights should have been a bargaining chip for access to the free market if anything. Now we have no leverage over that.
I voted for Starmer, because I didn’t want tories or Farage anywhere near the prime minister spot. But other than his stance on Ukraine, it’s just loss after loss with him.

That fishing is even worth a footnote in these negotiations is a travesty.
Fishing matters jack-shit for the economy (the fucking toilet paper industry is larger) and if politicians really wanted to support local fishers they would just put the hammer to the large industrialized fishing companies.
