This has given me major pause about flying my MIL to visit us in the US. She only speaks Italian and Portuguese, so we usually write a letter for her explaining that she’ll be staying at our address during her stay. But after this I’m extremely worried that won’t be good enough, and her not speaking English will incite extra cruelty.
That is not new, a couple of years ago I’m boarding was blocked because I didn’t filled the residence part.

Absolutely disgusting the way they were treated – however yeah, showing up in Hawaii, one of the highest cost of living places in the country and extremely popular for tourism, with no booked accommodation does show they were probably gonna do some kind of workaway or woofing or something. I don’t agree with the policy but its reasonable for the officials to suspect they had intention to work.

Because, in an article where it’s about two “adults” during a vacation that have been detained, the story is not the same with two actual teens.
On behalf of normal minded Americans, we are so sorry for their mistreatment and violation of their safety. There was no reason to subject these young woman to such drastic measures. Hoping they can find a new place to holiday in peace!

When I went to London and France about six years ago I had to prove where I was staying in both countries before I was allowed into the country. I was stopped at the counter while in the airport and the Chunnel counter and had to provide booking information and addresses . So …it’s what it is.
How about we start demanding that all Americans tourists have hotel bookings? This may be the way to combat the AirBnB plague too.

If you are coming to a country for tourism, you are supposed to have a proof of acommodation, return tickets, etc. To prove the border guards that you are coming for the reasons you are saying. This has always, always been this way. Maybe in the past, people from 1st world country were treated leniently. Officers did not enforce the same policies upon them. But these requirements have always been imposed on the rest of the world.
Most of the world has to get a visa and prove their income, employment, ties to their home country, etc while getting the said visa. Just to ensure they will not abuse their tourist visa.
You probably have visa free entry. So already very lenient. Next time, at least book your stay and have your return tickets if you come as a tourist. Who goes to a country as a tourist and cannot show proof of accommodation? No hotel, airbnb, campsite booking? No letter from a friend stating you will stay with them?
Do not visit the states, they are detaining folks for any petty reason. It’s not worth risking the cash.
Yeah, the US have always been paranoid in this regard but jailing strip searching and deporting them over that is unaccusable. At worst they should have refused them entry and let them take a flight back to Europe, you know without the strip searching and humiliating.

Isn’t a US address (to, say a hotel) a prerequisite for an ESTA entry permit? I’ve always had to give my hotels address when I want to go to the states. What address did they give?
Hard to believe I’m saying this but f us in the goat a$$ world! Spend your money on anything else rather traveling to the States. Post about it and the switch from say New Orleans trip to maybe visiting old Orleans. I would have prior said “Red States only” but now I just think a general boycott of all things American is in order.
