Hrant Dink thought that the definition of genocide should not be limited to daily politics, and thus opposed official recognition of the Armenian Genocide by France and Germany. While he supported Turkey’s accession into the EU, Dink stated that Germany attempts to use the Armenian Genocide as a lever to obstruct the accession process.

He told the media that he would “deny the genocide” in France to challenge the upcoming law. Also believing that the Turks don’t have bad intentions, Dink stated that they in reality are nice people, but are afraid of learning that their ancestors did bad things. He also “shares the pain” with the Turkish people regarding how hard it is to confront such a past.
