Just wanted to share this for those who aren’t convinced that adopting a *public* universal coverage system isn’t the best solution… (I do hear this a lot)

What happened in the US in the 1980s?

Better example is Poland.
Much poorer. After fall of communism difference between them and the US in expected lifetime was like 5years or so. For the US of course. Didn’t really invest much in public healthcare keeping spending for most part of last 30 years below 5% of GDP. That they had much lower. Only recently started pushing to *gasp* 6% of GDP on healthcare.
Anyway in 2023 Poland officially took over US when it comes to expected lifetime.
Cheeseburgers and COVID really did a number on the United States.

I would expect different result, if we split US by different race….

In the U.S.: Eliminating CVD could raise life expectancy by up to 7 years
In the EU: Eliminating CVD could raise life expectancy by ~2 to 3 years
Drugs are a helluva drug
Removing overdose deaths could boost U.S. life expectancy by around 1 to 1.5 years, bringing it much closer to countries like France, Germany, and the UK, all of which currently outpace the U.S.

Interesting that the start of trickle down economics is when the US life expectancy started dropping off

US healthcare spending is the most per capita with the shittiest outcomes.
Why?
Profits. Lots and lots of profits.

This the sum of 45 years of trickle down economics. It started with Reagan and has continued to trickle down their leg until they got Trumped.

Most of the bad things in UK can be traced back to Th*tcher.

You have to be extremely careful in what food you eat here in the states. There is A LOT of processed food and ingredients/additives that aren’t allowed in other countries. There’s generally some gluten in the bread here, which is filling, though gluten free is becoming more popular here. The other bread additives make it very soft and have a long shelf life but they aren’t natural or good for you.
The produce here can have dangerous chemicals like pesticides that you can’t wash off before eating. And now Trump has cut the department in charge of checking to ensure that our milk and dairy products are safe. Yeah, they cut the funding for that area too.
I’ve personally traveled several times to Germany, Austria, Italy, and the Czech Republic (now Czechia). I never felt bloated or sick after eating, even the one time we did go to a McDonalds instead of our local preferences.
The food here is just generally bad for you, especially if it tastes good. Even the fruits and vegetables that aren’t organic can be unsafe. And the food that is safe and good for you they charge a ridiculous price that a lot of people here simply can’t afford, especially if they have several kids.
This country was never “Great”, it was good or better at times but that just depends who you were. Freedoms and the people’s power have gone down hill over the last few decades and the US Supreme Court decision in Citizens United on political campaign finance allowed corporations and unions to spend limitless amounts of money, effectively letting the rich now buy their candidates. The French would be on their 5 national protest by now, funny but true 😅. At least they would have done something. But here, with the help of social media and Fox “news” they’ve effectively brainwashed a portion of the population and many people here literally have no idea what is really happening in this country.
