Some 80 percent of Georgians want to join the EU, but the authoritarian government is standing in the way after suspending talks last November. Instead, the government has moved closer to Russia, repeating Putin’s talking points, and criticizing the West.
This is despite the fact that Russia controls two regions of Georgia — Abkhazia and South Ossetia — which it claims are independent breakaway countries. And although the Georgian government has claimed it’s in talks with Russia about returning those territories to Georgia, there’s no evidence Russia is willing to do so.
A significant number of Georgians are either below the poverty line or earn a low income. Georgia has a relatively high level of income disparity compared to its neighbors and the EU.
