Once known primarily as the site of a nuclear disaster of 26 April, 1986, the Chornobyl Zone is now also a frontline of Ukraine’s defense.

Russian troops invaded this area in the early days of the full-scale war, crossing the border from Belarus. Since then, Ukrainian soldiers have been stationed here to prevent another attack through the north — a constant and very real threat.

These photos were taken during a rare visit to this restricted area. They show how Ukrainian defenders from the 78th Air Assault Regiment of the Ukrainian Armed Forces live and serve in one of the world’s most haunting places.

Since the full-scale invasion began, supporting our team and gathering donations has become more challenging as we, like everyone else in Ukraine, focus on fundraising for our defenders. Now, we turn to you—the international community and supporters of Ukraine—to help us continue producing vital stories that not only support Ukraine’s fight against invasion but also remind the world of the value of freedom.
