This really seems like one of those things that will end up being nothing but they’ve made it into something by trying to hide what it was about.

Someone tell them we went through generations of silence and cover ups in our own church, and we’re not doing it with another religious institution in this country ever again.

Just want to address some stuff with a comment as I know a bit about what’s going on behind the scenes and there’s been a lot of rumours and misinformation going around, but take it with a grain of salt as I’m just a stranger on reddit. The mosque is run and funded by the Al-Maktoum Foundation from the UAE. They were given allegations of high ranking people in the mosque engaging in a number of improper behaviours- Corruption/ cronyism in giving high paying jobs to family members and friends, (rumoured salary of the shiekh was about 168k) affiliation with the Muslim Brotherhood, a lack of transparency surround the handling of charitable donations given by the local Muslim community to various causes like Palestine as well as the concern around the Quran school, which was meant to be free for students as the Al-Maktoum Foundation had allocated funds for this, but then discovered students were being charged. Representatives from the Foundation ended up coming to Ireland to investigate, and at a meeting with the community stated that the Sheikh could no longer speak about Gaza at Friday sermons, which caused a lot of outrage. The Foundation then made the decision at some point to close the Cultural Centre until they had finished investigating and as a result of the violent altercation that had occurred over the weekend. They should be releasing a statement soon about the issue. I understand one of the cryptic statements released mentioned the safety of kids- to my knowledge there is no allegations of child abuse being discussed. The message was just extremely poorly worded. For transparency sake, I want to state that I did attend the primary school for 2 and a half as a child, and have been to the mosque to pray as a kid. I would no longer consider myself as a Muslim at this point in my life and do not practice the faith.
