And they think they can end their reliance on the US as they refuse to defend their own backyard.

Being from the UK it appalls me how poorly we have maintained our military.

They wouldn’t struggle to do it if they actually tried to do it

I will speak for France. France has had a professional army since the end of the Gulf War in the 90s. After the Cold War. I don’t understand why European countries are not restoring military service since we are in a new cold war. This would allow troops to be raised en masse. France has decided to develop its reserve of volunteers.

The UK alone has 25 million men and women in the “fit for service” category. Take even half of that, and it still blows this 25k number out of the water. If war were to reach European countries, Europe as a whole could field so, so much more than 25k.

From the article:
“Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, the British chief of the defence staff, is said to have asked his counterparts on the Continent if they could put together a 64,000-strong force to send to the country in the event of a peace deal.”
The article is actually about answers/estimates Radakin received to a hypothetical question about a peace-keeping force. The headline is, judging from some of the comments here, click bait.

They would, at first. But they would also be trained, armed, fed well and given a certain mission. Even after 3 years-plus the Russians can’t do this.

European countries armies are lot smaller than i thought.
It’s why any notion of the EU taking on Russia in defense of Ukraine is a pipe dream.

Europe has no excuse to sit on their hands. Relaying on US as deterrent is likely the cause of neglect of each and every European nation defensive and offensive forces. Russian tacticians are surely aware of this. This also evident in coalition of the willing why be so hesitant, and frankly shy.
Maybe we deserve what’s coming to us, if this true, and I thin it is true then instead of quiet desperation Europeans should grow some balls instead of loafing around hoping for a saviour or a deal.
The saviour is Trump who wants his dick in Europe’s ass. Choices need to be made and fast – looking at you UK, France, and Poland.
