      Don’t break the law and it won’t be a problem.

      Good. We should work on raising that number. We should also put them to work and make prison a very undesirable place to be.

      On the one hand, “oh no… anyway.” On the other hand, countries with the lowest recidivism rates tend to have really excellent prisons in particular for first time offenders, to catch and reform them. See Norwegian prisons that are more or less schools for young men. Getting thrown in on a mattress in an overcrowded prison isn’t going to reform anyone.

      We should have a two tier prison system – first offence or early days, let us treat you like someone loves you (which they probably haven’t to date!) Repeat flyer? Into Mountjoy as it exists today.

      I get why people don’t give a shit about the treatment of prisoners but come on, how we treat them is a measure of how successful our society is.

      I’m sure everyone has seen those photos of Scandinavian prisons and so on, I’m not suggesting that we go to that level because I don’t think it’s feasible, but we could at least provide beds. If we can’t hold prisoners in appropriate conditions then we need to do something about it.
