The risks you take when you own a church

She claimed that her dad “left me at a very young age” and “all I had was my mom and dad fighting all the time”.

She also claimed her father called her names and that she “wasn’t allowed to hang out with friends”.

Mr Walsh told Tullamore Circuit Court the statements were defamatory and he was “devastated that someone he loves would go online and spread lies

    2. And shit like this is exactly the sort of crap, spurious lawsuit that means we cant have nice things, and everything must be overregulated to death. How the fuck is the church liable(not defending a church, i detest all organised religion) and not just the girl who made the statements

This is bonkers. No wonder insurance costs a fortune.

Didn’t have being sorry for a Church being forced to pay a legal claim to a victim in 2025 as something I would feel for them on the bingo card.

She peddled her lies, all over the altar, over the font, on the internet….she is a liar!

A church (as an institution, rather than just the building) having an “owner” is such a bizarre concept.

What planet is this judge on? The award of €14,400 is only for the church putting the video online, and it’s clear they took it down the minute they were contacted by the father/his solicitor:

      >The video had been viewed 192 times, the court heard.

      > After they received a legal letter from Mr Walsh, [the church] stopped publishing videos online.

      >Mr Von Mollendorff immediately took the video of the service down after he was contacted by Mr Walsh’s solicitors.

      > Judge Meehan attributed 60pc of the total damages to the publication of the video.

      >Judge Meehan took into consideration the fact they removed the video immediately when contacted, the video was “not widely circulated” and that some viewers may not have accessed the part of the video that included the statements.

To me, this father should have received at most €1,000 as his antics in suing will only have damaged his reputation further along with the relationship with his daughter.

He’s obtained a judgment vindicating his good name on the basis that he has proved (in court) that his daughter is a liar.

      > the video…”spread like wildfire”, resulting in people approaching him on nights out to discuss it

I’ll bet it did, and I’ve got a feeling a few more people will be approaching him on his nights out in future after his Streisand-effect antics in bringing to the world’s attention what his almost adult child thinks of him (she’d be 17 now). I’m sure they will all be full of praise for him in suing a church of all things.

He sounds like a tremendous father, what with him establishing in court his daughter is a liar, and on her baptism of all occasions (which he obviously didn’t attend). What a great start in life she will have thanks to him bringing the case. Real dad of the year award stuff.

Assuming most broadcast will stop now which is a shame.

Good to see the days of the church having special protection from the judiciary are long gone.

It seems like a ridiculous case, but it’s pretty cut and dried tbh.
