Doesn’t surprise me. It is very difficult to adopt from them. Myself and a former colleague both got rejected by them.

I ended up buying an IKC dog. Still has the dog and still treated him like a king. But no, I was never allowed to adopt.

Well, their rules are ridiculously strict and over the top. I get why they do it, but if they want their dogs to have a higher chance of adoption they have to relax their rules a bit. I don’t mean letting anyone walk out with one, but maybe letting dogs go to homes with children, a normal sized back yard or to young adults in a house share would be a start. In the end, if someone wants a dog they’re going to get one. Either through adoption or else they’ll just buy one online.

It’s very sad but they make it deliberately as difficult as possible to adopt from the shelter, a colleague of mine not too long ago tried that route about a year or so after their last dog passed away, who lived a long lovely life, because the dog would be at home alone for about 7 hours twice a week on the days they were both in the office.

They’ve since bought one from a reputable breeder.

They wanted a letter from my landlord stating that we are allowed to have a pet, to get a dog. Our contract had no mention of pets because we specifically asked for it but to be in there because we intended on having a pet. Not good enough.
We got a cat off of done deal from some old lady instead.
I get why you would want some checks. To see if the house and garden are suitable and stuff but come on.

I must be a rare exception compared to everyone else but I had no problem adopting from the DSPCA. I do work from home a 5 days a week most weeks which obviously helps but they asked me barely any questions other than a photo of the garden.

While I’d be against any type of animal cruelty, this type of thing is plain dumb.

They say they have 120 dogs, 63 cats, 43 rabbits, 13 guinea pigs, two snakes and two donkeys. They have a fuckin pet zoo, and are looking to raise money to fund it. Why should they have charitable status, with all that goes with it, tax breaks etc….its not like the country is short of dogs and cats!

I signed up to foster dogs with one of the main charities over a year ago and have never been offered one…

We will be looking to get a new dog in early June. I’ve been looking at shelters to start the paperwork end of things the last couple weeks. The dspca adoption process is the most awkward one I’ve seen so far at least going by what’s stated on their website.

We don’t live in Dublin, so we would want to know that the dog we wanted to meet was still available. But they don’t allow even a 24/48hr hold on a dog. As we have a dog, a meet would need to happy between our dog and the potential adoption dog. It looks like we would need to go to Dublin 3 times to bring a dog home, which in some ways isn’t a huge deal but at the same time the whole process seems unnecessarily awkward. Especially on the first trip where the dog your interested in may not be there when you get up. They won’t take any booking requests or adoption form submissions in any way other than In person.

Most other rescues seem to have an online application form questionnaire which you fill in as the first step. Home checks etc are done and then the process of meeting your dog, a meet between dogs and adoption all happen fairly quickly.

My mother worked for an SPCA for a few years. Later she fostered for another rescue. When her last dog died (old age) she went to several rescues and none would rehome to her. There were issues with her garden, her living alone, being over a certain age (she’s not even pension age). Whole thing was absurd. She bought a dog and when she wanted another she bred a litter. If I wanted a dog, I’d probably have to buy too as I have kids.

By the way Dogs Trust is a scam. I found many strays over the years and they’ve all got rejected. Just another fraudulent charity pretending to be caring and humble

I wish the landlords weren’t so mean about pets. Take a pet deposit and keep it. So many beloved pets end up on the streets or in shelters over the stupid rule.

Hoping these babies get the home they need and there is room for others then who need a shelter

A neighbour of mine wanted to adopt a dog from our local shelter for company after her husband passed away. For whatever reason they said no and she ended up having to get a puppy from a breeder, something she despised doing, but that dog is now coming up on a year old, he’s the best trained puppy I’ve ever met, he’s walked 3 times a day, he never jumps up, he sits until he’s told to heel etc. that could have been a rescue dog if it wasn’t for the tight rules.

I tried for about two years to adopt a dog and the rules and restrictions were ridiculous.
I didn’t want a particular type of dog and was willing to take on an older one or one with health issues, basically the ones nobody wants to take.

There was a six year old bulldog with hip issues. Absolutely lovely friendly dog but had mobility issues. Our application was denied because our garden didn’t have a 1.5m high fence surrounding it. The dog couldn’t jump six inches. He remained listed for 3 months after that. I don’t know if he was rehomed.

The local place was also always advertising that they were in crisis and at capacity but when we’d inquire they wouldn’t have any dogs, or they would all be reserved.

I also offered to volunteer, hoping that would help and I was told that they didn’t need volunteers but I could donate. I was already donating. After that I cancelled my donation and haven’t had anything to do with them since.

Eventually, after quiet a long search, found a breeder who seemed decent and got a dog that way, but it wasn’t for the want of trying to adopt that we ended up buying one.

I totally get they need to be careful and some dogs can be problematic but they are in no way pragmatic about adopting dogs out.

A national neutering program is desperately need now!

Dept of Ag’s Animal Welfare Unit should be rolling out a nationwide program to neuter stray animals; thus reducing the number of abandoned pups and kittens born to strays.

      They won’t.

The crisis faced by animal welfare organisations (the good ones – not all are great) is untenable.

Support is extremely limited from the Animal Welfare Unit and it’s only going to get worse if left unseen to.

No houses for people. No houses for pets. What has this country come to!!!
