Yes, so obviously yes. Pollution killing machines. They didn’t exist 25 years ago. Clearly no need for them.

    2. There aren’t that many SUVs on the road to begin with. Most of what people call SUVs are crossovers and just the company’s hatchback/saloon with some extra height.

    3. Alastor001 on

Have people actually seen SUVs? Cause they are not that common here. Ain’t America.

    4. Jean_Rasczak on

SUV, which I expected the writer of this letter is getting mixed up with Crossovers are the latest in a long line of things people want to cancel

The same people seem to think that everyone should do what they like and should only act like they do, if they don’t then it should be banned

    5. iHyPeRize on

There should be a tax on SUVs and larger vehicles to try and incentivise those don’t who don’t need them not to buy them.

Too many yummy mummy’s dropping her 1 and only child to school in a Hyundai Touscan when she simply doesn’t need it. But wants it to look the part.

We don’t live in America, the roads here aren’t big enough to house a giant 4×4, and that’s the way we’re going because cars are getting bigger

    6. Toffeeman_1878 on

Can’t have a meaningful conversation without defining which vehicles would be categorised as an SUV.

It’s easy to identify the Chelsea Tractor but is a Yaris Cross considered an SUV? I know older people who like these type of cars as they are easier to get in and out of – something which becomes more important with advancing years.

On the face of things this would seem reasonable but scratch ever so slightly deeper and there are problems with this conclusion.

As a disabled person I need the extra space SUV affords, the greater visibility is useful also.

It was mentioned that 25 years ago they didn’t exist, guess what 25 years ago by large disabled people were excluded from many daily activities. Should we go back to that?

The hybrid system of my Toyota gets better fuel economy and produces lower emissions than a good diesel car of similar size from 10 years ago.

There is more to Ireland than just Dublin or any other city, for someone from a rural environment with dodgy roads, limited visibility or whatnot a bigger SUV makes sense.

    8. Ireland can’t really do anything other than restrict consumers buying options even more, so we end up paying more for whatever we can get our hands on.

Europe could bring in laws to reduce the weight of vehicles. That would put a stop to unnecessary SUVs, it would stop car companies from making cars bigger just to justify charging more, it would save fuel, reduce energy of crashes, and make driving on European country roads easier.

But no body wants to say anything to the poor European car industry at the moment, they are struggling trying to sell us the cars that the Chinese market asked for but now doesn’t want because their own cars are better. They just want us all to pay more so that they don’t have to change.

Judging by the state of the potholes in the roads, especially the cities. I would at the very least introduce a tax on larger vehicles

    10. Any_Necessary_9588 on

Not a chance. Govt. raking in too much taxes from motorists – between VRT, VAT, Motor Tax, Excise duty on fuel, even Carbon tax on electricity for those went to EV. Turkeys don’t vote for Christmas 🦃

    11. If they ban SUVs then people will just start buying Ford F150 😂😂😂

It is not SUV, it is pickup truck

    12. choppy75 on

It was time to ban everything that’s causing climate change about 20 years ago. Bit late now….. We are cooked regardless

    13. An old car in poor mechanical condition is much more dangerous. There are scenarios when a suv/mpv is useful (not to drop the kid in school). There are many things the government can do for safer roads, starting with tje quality of the non-main roads. Banning the subs should be on the bottom of the list

    14. Tax them to high heavens. They have no use case not also covered by an estate, outside of people with mobility issues, who could be granted relief if necessary. Crossovers are a scourge on the roads and are near exclusively driven by horrific drivers

    15. Junior-Protection-26 on

      Ban SUVS

      Ban Conor McGregor

Ban people who talk loudly on trains

Ban trees from growing too near to powerlines

      Ban immigrants from buying houses

Ban mould from all rental properties

Ban the sale of Guinness in non-Guinness glasses

Ban the sun from causing sunburn

Ban flies from entering the house through open windows

    16. vinceswish on

Monthly “let’s ban hatchbacks and crossovers” post.

    17. SamSquanch16 on

No but follow the Dutch model and make using a car in urban areas obsolete by providing good public transport and cycling infrastructure.

    18. malavock82 on

You should just introduce minimum safety standards to prevent accident with pedestrians and limit damage. All SUV and pickup trucks would miserably fail. you can have axceptions for people with a working license

    19. Environmental_Law463 on

      Ban alcohol/vapes/tractors/cows/birthday candles/clothes 🥱

    20. Lopsided_Tap5841 on

Small-minded Irish. Same with climate change think we can make a difference. I was in Walmart last year and there were more pickups and suv then we have in the whole of Ireland .in one carpark 🥴

    21. CascaydeWave on

Tbh, as a person that cycles to work but also drives a fair bit. I think what is really more important is to restrict car through traffic in cities/towns whilst expanding cycle/public transport infrastructure.

Weight/size tax on some cars may not be the worst idea, but realistically it is not how we improve safety and reduce emissions in the way this person wants imo.

Ranelagh mums wouldn’t know what to do if they had to walk their kids to school – aka 500m

    23. joshlev1s on

No. If you’re worried about some SUV’s being too big because some are, despite the most popular SUV’s not being the biggest, then we could discuss further restricting size and weight of cars on the B license as a disincentive to purchasing them. Along with this, make alternative transport as cheap and convenient as driving. I really don’t like how much talk goes into banning things. You can make it annoying but ultimately let people buy whatever car they want.

    24. Annatastic6417 on

Ah yes, farmers must drive to the bottom of the field in a Punto or get the Luas.

    25. Brine-O-Driscoll on

Would like to see some law about led lamp bulbs, whether it’s lowering the height or banning them.

They’re blinding to drive past at night on big cars.

    26. railer201 on

Not the annual Irish Times letter reporting on hearing the first cuckoo then – oh drat – we’ll have to wait a bit longer then !

    27. yuphup7up on

Yes, except for commercial vehicles with legitimate work permits. There’s no reason you need a 4×4/jeep for a family car. Estates/small crossovers work just fine.

    28. Rider189 on

Kinda tough to ban them when mpvs fell off a cliff production wise back in 2017.

Where do I put all the kids ? 😅

Honestly this is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Fix town and city road design and it’s far less of an issue.

Top it off with decent alternative transport and we’re sorted.

    29. yankdevil on

Add a vehicle weight tax. And yes, that would penalize EVs with larger batteries but a 40-50 kWh battery is more sane for most drivers.
