I really hope it pans out. The big question remains, how will this help expel Russia from all Ukrainian territory?

The majority of semiconductor related materials are in Russian temporary controlled territories. The next year is going to be interesting if Taiwan is invaded; it will force USA into either A) re-capturing Taiwan (which lets be honest, slim chance), or B) Fund enormous military aid in hopes of pushing Russia out of the only shot USA has at regaining its ground in semiconductor materials.
Purely because of the materials in Russia’s temporary controlled region, added in with the necessity we need those materials alongside our financially backed interest over a course of multiple decades, I heavily doubt concessions will be made in regards to the territory gained by Russia thus far.

Strong whiff of hopium in that briefing, but the deal as discussed doesn’t sound to bad… until they change the deal.

So Trump just signed a deal with Ukraine for site’s in regions he wants ceded to Russia?
Either they’re excluded from the deal.
Or maybe Putin offered them to Trump at a better price and that’s why he’s pushing for those regions to be ceded to Russia.

And all of this the USA could have had over a decade ago, for but a fraction of the investments, if half their politicians were not Russian assets.

It doesn’t say anything about Ukraine getting Aid that’s worthwhile though, the US have since announced a $50mil package which is an insult, they should be giving billions worth per package

I wish more of those dots were in the occupied/partially occupied territories.
Fingers crossed but now at least there are real dollars at stake for Trump.

This could turn out to be one of the most genius chess moves a US President ever made. If the minerals and rare earths are in occupied territories of US interests, we now have a reason to put boots on the ground to protect them. This puts Russia in a tight spot to go to war with The United States over a couple Oblasts that aren’t theirs to begin with. This could go down in the history books as one of the most genius deals a president ever made to stop a war and get Ukraine their land back . I do not think Crimea will go back to Ukraine though.

I’m starving for some positive news, but this sounds like a good deal, yes?

“US contributes investment and military assistance.” You don’t have to be a bigly jeenius to translate this as “Our companies will run your mines. Sign or no more weapons.” It’s fucking shameful!

I don’t trust Trump for shit, but I know Ukraine’s making tough choices for the long-term best interest of all their people (unlike Russia, that doesn’t give a shit about Russians) so I really hope this works out for the best.
That being said, it seems like there are some cautionary steps that Ukraine might consider.
Since Trump is the enormous rat turd that he is, there’s the risk that some Ukrainians might find the idea of dealing with him to be suspicious or demoralizing. To help mitigate that, the Ukrainian government could–
–do everything they can (without disclosing classified info) to tie a direct line between specific clauses in the deal and how Ukraine will use them for strategic and tactical advantages in securing their country, like increased air defense, and civil defense readiness
–and draw a line to how they plan to improve life for people, like demining, education, benefits for veterans and their survivors
–don’t even slow down a little on rebuilding their domestic defense manufacturing
–consider hiring 3rd party security consultants from a country that’s not in love with Trump or Putin (Maybe Canada, France or the Netherlands) and go through the minerals deal with a fine-tooth comb to identify any tiny little clause that could expose Ukraine to security risks. Is the US bringing in its own people to help with the operations? Russia’s going to have honey traps all over them. Be careful what sensitive info they have access to.
This probably all sounds super obvious, but I really don’t trust Trump, and I really want things to go well for Ukraine.

Seems like a distraction, there is no war-related anything… continue to support is more than weak.

I was hoping that this post would actually explain what in the deal, but those screenshots just repeat the same vague bullets that have been widely reported. What does the deal commit Ukraine/US to *do* and what does it say that each *gets*?

There is some logic to pre-purchasing the minerals, and it isn’t without precedent to purchase raw materials from a country so your enemies didn’t purchase them.
The way this usually works is that one country (USA) agrees to buy all of the minerals at market rate from another country (Ukraine), when they become available.
It is an exclusive deal.
Spain sold minerals to Britain during ww2 to keep them out of Nazis hands.
