Send a letter to everyone on the register, sent to their registered address, saying that X person needs to reply to the letter to confirm they live at that address and will vote from that address.

No response means they’re removed from the register.

It will cost a bit to arrange, but its the easiest option, IMO.

    2. I’m surprised it’s that few areas…

I’ve seen the registers for my area – my terrace of houses has over 2x the number of people registered there than live there.

One of them has multiple women registered and for the bulk of the time I lived there it was a student rental with guys only – so they moved out over ten years ago.

Actual turnout figures here are probably incredibly high, but for the registers full of duplicates and dead people.

I always get two polling cards for elections, so does my husband. Obviously I only get one ballot paper when I go to vote, but I’m sure we aren’t the only people that get two polling cards.

This why the chat about “turnout” after the last GE was mostly just waffle. The register is a total mess. Hopefully the commission sort it soon.

Central digital registration of voter+address and a requirement to inform county Council of a new address would be a good solution. You just amend the address on the name.

When I moved from the Netherlands I was shocked by the backwards system of even having to register. In NL you just tell the local council your address and you’re automatically enrolled and the rolls are amended.

Would help a lot with doing the census as well, you already have an idea of all the registered people in the country.

There are 5 members of my family all registered to vote and we received 2 polling cards each …but also 2 of every candidate leaflet so for each candidate 10 leaflets came through the door.
Also my granparents polling cards and leaflets were coming to the same address for years after their deaths.

My sister got two polling cards. One to her house and one to my mum’s.

My brother has the same name as our grandfather, just different middle names. 2 polling cards arrive for “John Smith” every time without fail. Obviously he only votes the once but it’s annoying that grandad has been 10 years and his polling card still comes.

The reason they are looking at this _now_ is to pull the rug from voters forced away by the Housing Crisis.

What??????? Candidates that took multiple counts to be re elected previously and suddenly topped the polls this time. It took Simon Harris 15 counts in the previous election. And miraculously topped the polls in November’s election. They weren’t even trying to hide the fraud.

That’s probably one reason why turnout’s been getting lower.

If a good chunk of the list is in another county, or currently residing in an underground timber apartment, it’s hard for them to come home to vote twice, or at all.

I get 2 poling cards in different counties even though I updated my address. They really need to sort out the register

Oh look. Another reason why we should introduce universal mandatory ID for all residents.

And if we plugged it into Revenue and Social Welfare we could be much more sophisticated in how we collect taxes and pay social welfare and other benefits.
