      Texan factories, French assembly lines and the foundries of Kharkiv are keeping Kyiv in a war few thought it could survive. Yet, unheralded, a regular “software guy” in a small Fulham workshop is also doing his bit to keep Ukrainians alive.

      Dmytro Selin, a 42-year-old from Dnipro, moved to the UK six years ago for a tech job. It was only after Russia’s full-scale invasion of his homeland in 2022 that he found his true “purpose”.

      The first few months he spent trying “dumb things” like “bombarding Russians with SMS messaging saying don’t go to the war”, but he soon realised Ukraine’s real pressing issue: Moscow’s enormous drone army. With a background in communications and a mother who worked in a Soviet missile factory, Selin was better prepared than most to engineer a solution.

      Each evening, he would come home from work to tinker with an invention. “Most of the software development happened in the bedroom, most of the hardware development was in the living room,” he remembers. What he came up with was the “Tsukorok”, or “Sugar Cube”, a handheld drone detector
