Putin on one side and Trump on the other are the ‘external pressures’ that Europe needed to finally take security matters in its own hands and grow up. In a way, we have to be grateful to them.

Europe can be a formidable force of good in a world full of autocracies and repression. But that force of good needs a credible hard power to stand a chance. Without it, all the soft power in the world means little.

Let’s make Europe so strong that we can not be bullied or even attacked by anyone, forced to sign unfavourable ‘deals’ with anyone.

      Meanwhile reality:
[British officials met select European allies at a discreet dinner in Brussels last week to hatch plans for a new defense fund designed to sidestep the European Commission, keep a lid on public debt and rearm faster. […] The secret gathering was hosted by Poland, according to one EU official, granted anonymity to speak freely about the confidential discussions, like others quoted in this story. […] “I don’t see the Southerners interested in this mechanism, but they are interested in grants,” the EU official said. “I’m not sure if they are yet on the same page.” Northern states, by contrast, are reluctant to support any plan that draws on mutualized debt.](https://www.politico.eu/article/uk-eu-defense-fund-arms-investment-procurement/)

      As well as:
[The British government has rejected an EU plan to tie talks on fishing rights to other topics in Keir Starmer’s EU reset — including a defense and security pact. […] Member states like France are worried that they could lose lucrative fishing rights in British waters when the current maritime agreement expires in June 2026. They want to move to more permanent access arrangements.](https://www.politico.eu/article/uk-rejects-eu-plan-tie-defense-security-pact-to-fishing-quotas/)

[The European Commission will phase out the term “Rearm Europe” to describe its multi-billion initiative to rearm Europe after backlash from the leaders of Italy and Spain, who argue the name risks alienating citizens.](https://www.euronews.com/my-europe/2025/03/21/brussels-confirms-rearm-europe-rebrand-after-backlash-from-italy-and-spain)
