If she complained about the only surgeon in Ireland who does the operation then she might not have any other options here. We’re a small country and the surgeon in question won’t be in a position to operate if there’s an active complaint from the family about them – it would impact their ability to do their job.

Why it can’t be done in the EU via the national treatment purchase find causes an eyebrow raise. If it’s a valid treatment that is recommended then there is surely somewhere in Europe doing it in which case the HSE can access it for the family via the NTPF and she wouldn’t have to pay the US surgeon’s fees.

To be fair the yanks are probably offering the surgery for the money, as the consultant stated. Sorry for them, but the surgeon going down the treatment route after an IMC complaint is a recipe for disaster for all, reasonable for surgeon to decline to see them further. They’re not saying she can’t be seen elsewhere.

The doctor is probably just protecting his career.

She has already made one complaint against him.

So she had a HSE consultant here who said they wouldn’t operate as the child’s condition had not yet fully developed.

She went to Florida and some US Surgeon said he’ll operate for €300k cash.

Her Irish consultant advised her that the surgery in the US was being offered purely for money.

She didn’t like that so she lodged a formal complaint with medical council about her consultants behaviour and a second complaint about the standard of care.

Consultant wont deal with her anymore.

Feel sorry for the kid but the consultant is dead right. She sounds like a right piece of work.

Apparently the American Doctor in question specialises in “cosmetic leg lengthening”, which is absolute quackery that preys on (mostly) mens’ insecurities and can cause permanent damage. So yeah, I’d not be inclined to believe he has patients’ best interests at heart.

if UCLA, Johns Hopkins or the Mayo Clinic do not list this procedure as commonly recommended then I would be very wary that the procedure is sound medicine. Those US institutions are unlikely to recommend quackery.

why would any professional continue to work with a patient/client that’s taking proceedings against them?

and on the flip side, if the patient is so unhappy with their care that they submitted a formal complaint, why arent they seeking treatment under a different doctor instead?

      > If you complain in a shop, you don’t get barred

Except they can and will bar you.

I don’t see anything wrong in what the surgeon said. If it was done in a hospital elsewhere in the EU, I’d feel a lot better about it.

I’ve been tempted to complain about a certain section of the HSE but have held off because there is a chance I’ll need their care again in the future. I wasn’t doing it while I was under their care because I’m not going to bite the only hand that can feed me.

The person I feel the most sorry for here is the daughter!
